I have found a reference to the family cemetery on the Dilatush(Delatush)/VanWickle farm in Jamesburg. This cemetery, which is supposed to have some very attractive gravestones and an ornamental fence around it, is now part of the Jamesburg State Prison. I have been trying to get permission to visit the cemetery or at least get a list of those buried there, with little luck. The superintendent has been less than cooperative. He said if I gave him a name he would tell me if that person was buried there. I couldn't make him understand that I needed to know who was there. I gave up on him awhile ago. Does anyone know about this cemetery or have any suggestions? I've just started my Middlesex search and am not very familiar with the resources. I am also collecting any information on the Delatush/Dilatush, and Van Wickle names. I have a large amount of Dilatush and VanWickle info if anyone is interested in trading information. Hello. I'm new to this list. I'm researching several families in NJ, but right now I'm focusing on the SILVER family who settled in Burlington Co. in late 1600's, moved to Monmouth Co. in 1700's, then to "New" Windsor by mid 1700's, when it was part of Middlesex County. I'm having trouble finding any records on this branch of the family, and I thought maybe it was because Windsor later became part of Mercer County. Does anyone know where I should look for information - Middlesex County or Mercer County? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks a lot. Also, I'd like to join a historical society, and I saw several listed. Does anyone have information on which would be good? I saw one for Central New Jersey and one for just New Jersey. I don't want to go to any one county because I've got ancestors from several counties in NJ. Again, thanks. Beth BSmith7439@aol.com
From: Bob Griffin <bhb@cybernex.net> To: nj history bulletin board <nj_history@email.rutgers.edu> Date: Wednesday, June 30, 1999 5:22 PM Subject: Bergen Co. HIstorical Society Library Collection Many of you have read or heard in recent weeks that the Bergen Co. Historical Society's priceless book and clippings files collection will shortly be moved from its long time home at the Johnson Public Library in Hackensack.Sadly, this is true. For the past several years, we've been searching for another home. In October 1997, we were told by the Johnson P.L. Board of Trustees that we had 2 years to find a new home. Our situation is difficult because, as an all volunteer, non-profit organization, we've enjoyed the Johnson P.L. space at no cost to the Society, and our very modest budget does not provide for any excess funds to be used for rent. Likewise, while a few of our volunteers help patrons a couple of days a week, we really rely on the professional, salaried staff at the library to service the collection. Furthermore, it would not be sufficient for us merely to find an empty building, as there are significant safety and environmental concerns, the need for access during usual "library hours," and so forth. Therefore, we have concentrated our search on other possible library facilities, either public or academic. As you may be aware, today libraries everywhere are faced with severe space and financial difficulties. We have come face to face with this reality in our own search efforts. In our county-wide appeal (through the Bergen County Cooperative Library System of approx. 66 member libraries), only Rutherford P.L. and Mahwah P.L. admitted to any possible free space. Once it was checked out, the Rutherford space proved to be inadequate. At Mahwah, after some consideration, The Library Board elected NOT to grant us space in their new building. Likewise, after 6 months negotiating with Bergen Community College, we finally concluded there was simply no space at their campus in Paramus in which to house the collection, at this time. Two towns, Mahwah and Ridgewood, have vacant, old library buildings. The Mahwah Mayor and Council turned down the proposal made by the Township Administrator, Bob Anderson, to grant us space in the old Winter Library building in Mahwah. In Ridgewood, the old Pease building would be ideal space and would provide a very convenient, central location in the county. We have made a proposal to a special Committee that is investigating alternative uses for the building, and we are preparing a revised joint proposal with the Ridgewood Arts Council for the same space. If either proposal were accepted, however, we would probably not have access to the building for at least 2 to 3 years. Bergen County Executive, Pat Schuber, put us in touch with the president of Felician College, Sister Teresa Martin. Felician College is a small, Catholic college with its main campus in Lodi. Recently, they purchased the old Fairleigh Dickinson Univ. Campus property in Rutherford, and they plan to move some of their classes there. Our on-going discussions with Felician appear to be our best hope at the moment. We've had contact with a member of the history department faculty, and he is very eager to see us come to Lodi. I will be meeting with the director of the library and the vice president of administration tomorrow (7/1/99). Just today, I was also in touch with the library director at Ramapo College in Mahwah. She indicated that Ramapo was about to undertake an expansion program, and she was willing to investigate with the architect whether we might find room in their new facility. So, discussions are continuing there, as well. Meanwhile, we've been given a brief reprieve from the Johnson P.L board of trustees. Our June 30th (today) deadline has been extended to the end of August. At that time, we will either put the collection into storage at Felician College (assuming we would eventually move there, sometime in January '00), or into storage in a County office building in Hackensack. Either way, AFTER AUGUST 31, 1999, THE COLLECTION WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR AT LEAST 4 TO 6 MONTHS. Our long term goal is to unite the Johnson P.L. collection (which comprises about 1/3 of our total collection) with the other manuscripts, maps, atlases, photographs, bibles, newspapers, and other archive materials that are currently in storage in our HQ in River Edge. To that end, there are several options that might be available. First, of course, is the possibility of having our own facility at Historic New Bridge Landing (HNBL) in River Edge. We are working with the HNBL State Park Commission to see a fully developed historic park at New Bridge, and it would include a new library and archive facility. Also, we have discussed the possibility of a similar facility at the newly reclaimed Hackensack Water Company property in Oradell, also planning to become a historic and cultural resource center. Bergen Community College was sincerely interested in the collection, and eventually hopes to have enough room to consider housing the larger collection there. The same is true at the Pease library building in Ridgewood. In every case, we're talking about a minimum of 5 years before any of these possibilities are likely to pan out. We will continue to pursue each of them until we come up with the best solution. Meanwhile, anyone interested in using the collection had better do so this summer, as it will definitely be moved and/or stored after August 1999. I hope this explanation of our situation is helpful. Hello MCRs, This is just a reminder on Paid Researchers. ALL Paid Researchers that post to this list must agree to the NJMIDDLE Terms of Posting. Unfortunately, anyone can quickly subscribe and post to the list without agreeing to the terms. DON'T be fooled by these people. Your defense against these types of people is to check the Middlesex County Genealogy page for a listing of those paid researchers who have agreed to the terms. If the person is not there then they haven't agreed and I would strongly advise not using them. <http://www.rootsweb.com/~njmiddle/Towns/midcounty/paidresearch.htm> The above scenario happened this past weekend when "K. O'Brien" <kerryo@gvi.net> subscribed to every NJ county mailing list and posted his advertisement. He was contacted by me (as well as the other listowners) for this abuse and given an opportunity to agree to the terms. As of this date he has not agreed. If you have read the terms on the above page then you know how simple and easy they are. Why a person who wants you to hire them would not agree to these terms is beyond me. Again, DON'T BE FOOLED BY THESE HIT AND RUN OPPORTUNISTS. Glenn G. Hi Folks, I am interested in the Mersereau family residing in Middlesex County prior to the American Revolution. Andrew Mersereau, a native of New Jersey, fled from Middlesex to British lines where he joined the British army in the winter of 1775-76. His wife, Phebe, remained behind for 18 months to look after the farm and stock, before joining her husband. Andrew and Phebe joined the loyalist refugees at the evacuation of New York and went to New Brunswick, Canada where he died shortly after at Maugerville. His widow Phebe reported that Andrew had purchased his Middlesex property seven or eight years before the war from William Tennant. It was sold under confiscation to Samuel Potts. In his will, Andrew left his estate to Phebe Johnson, daughter of Abraham Johnson and Cornelius Wilson and Phebe Wilson, children of Robert Wilson, the brother-in-law of Andrew's wife. These three heirs were residing in Middlesex County in 1787. I am interested in information on the Mersereau family residing in Middlesex before or during the American Revolution. Dan

Dear Barb, Don't apologize for your suggestion - its a very good point. I do volunteer transcriptions for the Morris County, NJ, site on RootsWeb. A firm rule is that all surnames be capitalized (i.e. upper-case). While each of us are very familiar with our own genealogies, others received numerous E-mails daily and the ability to see a capitalized surname increases the chances of both recognizing it and also responding to the sender. Hello MCRs, Six days ago a new resource was created for researchers, the Middlesex County Resource Page. The URL is: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/NJ/Middlesex/> I won't go into the details of the page here, please feel free to check it out. There is also a link to it from the Middlesex County Genealogy Web Page. With this new resource I thought some of you may be confused as to who is who in this part of the Genealogy World, so here are a few descriptions. (the descriptions are mine, so they may not be "official" descriptions) RootsWeb - This is the server that the county mailing lists (NJMIDDLE) are on. In addition to the county mailing lists, RootsWeb is home to a large portion of the USGenWeb Project County Genealogy Sites (Middlesex County Genealogy), surname mailing lists, the newly created County & Surname Resource Pages, GenConnect Surname Forums and other Genealogy sites (Cyndi's, Black Sheep, The Olive Tree to name a few). The County Mailing Lists are stand alone mailing lists, meaning that there is no hierarchy of power. Each individual ListOwner controls his/her list and defines exactly what is appropriate on it. For more information on Rootsweb, go to this URL: <http://www.rootsweb.com/> For more information on the mailing lists, go to this URL: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/> The USGenWeb Project - This is a volunteer organization made up of thousands of members, each providing a web site for a county in the United States. Although RootsWeb is the server this organization is housed on, it is not it's governing body. The USGenWeb Project has a hierarchy, the County Coordinators answer to the State Coordinator who answers to the Regional Coordinator who answers to the US Coordinator. Although most RootsWeb County Mailing Lists are "owned" by the USGW CC for that county, this is not always the case and technically they have nothing to do with each other. For more information of the USGW Project, go to this URL: <http://www.usgenweb.org/index.html> WorldGenWeb - This provides the same information as the USGW Project but on a global scale. Neither organization is affiliated with the other. For more information on the WorldGenWeb, go to this URL: <http://www.worldgenweb.org/> GenConnect Forums - These are query & informational forums for surnames grouped by surnames and surnames grouped by area. You can search each individual forum for your surname or you can do a global search for your surname. The Surname Helper Query Forums, the USGenWeb Project and the WorldGenweb are also included in the global search feature. Every county in the United States now has a GenConnect Forum as well as over 15000 surnames. When using the GenConnect Forums, please remember that ONLY the query forum is for posting questions. The informational forums are for the posting of information, no questions are allowed. For more information on GenConnect, go to this URL: <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/index.html> For more information on the GenConnect Surname Resource Pages, go to: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/> For more information on the GenConnect County Resource Pages, go to: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/> For more information on the GenConnect World Wide Forums, go to: <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/qindex.html> I think that about covers it, if you have any questions please contact me via my personal email address and not on the list. Good Morning: With over 20 years experience, it is my good fortune to spend my time providing professional family research services in connection with New Jersey records, including, but not limited to, vitals, church, cemetery, land, probate, court, etc. My services extend to house history research, problem solving, and interviewing a relative or family friend in NJ and the surrounding area in order to enlarge the scope of your family information. Additionally, why not let me photograph the gravesites of your New Jersey ancestors. Just provide the name of the cemetery, the town it is located in, the person(s) of your interest, and leave the rest to me. If you would like to receive an Information Sheet/Bio, just let me know. It would be my pleasure to assist you in whatever way possible to try and uncover information regarding that elusive ancestor you've been researching for so long. And that's a wonderful way to be good to yourself! Bye for now, Bea
Harriet AYERS was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, October 18, 1804. She moved to Delaware County, Ohio, with her father, Thomas AYERS, in 1820. Harriet married David WHITE in 1822. (Obituary of Harriet WHITE, printed in Delaware Gazette, November 13, 1888.) Harriet AYERS is my GGgrandmother. I spent yesterday at the Orlando, FL, library, searching the New Jersey info for information about Thomas AYERS. Can anyone tell me if either of these Thomas AYERS individuals moved to Ohio? or provide any other clues? In the will of Robert Ross, Jr., a bequest is left to granddaughter Mary, Wife of Thomas Ayres. The will is dated August 15, 1810. In the will of Peter Ayers of Wantage Township, Sussex County, a bequest is left to son Thomas Ayers, to be left in the hands of his other sons David and Jacob until "Thomas shall personally appear to receive it himself."
