Would anyone know of any histories of New Brunswick /Middlesex ? I would be interested in the mid to later 1800's when my Irish ancestors immigrated to NB . They were Haggerty, McSpaden and Hughes . Mahalo , Kevin
In 1762, Elizabeth Warner was in Perth Amboy, Middlesex Co., NJ. She married, on July 20, John Scoby. At that time she was a widow, so Warner is her married name. Does anyone know what Warner Elizabeth was married to, if she had children, and what her maiden name was. I have no idea how old she was at that time. Her Scoby husband was supposedly 42. A man named WILLIAM JOLLY paid the 500£ fee for her to marry. Was he her father? That was a lot of money in those days. I can find no record of a Warner marrying a Jolly. Any help would be much appreciated! Joanne Scobee Morgan
Dear Friends, Thanks for the wonderful, positive response to my idea about recording the name changes. I've added all names contributed to the list. The scope has stretched a little beyond the few counties I contacted, but since all helps, I've included all changes I received. I'll post the full list every week or so until the contributions dry up--can't tell how long that will be. At that point it will go to Joe to be posted in the NJ Genweb Archives for all to use. Keep them coming, it doesn't take me much time to copy and paste them into the list. Again, many thanks to all for contributing, --Judy Cronk --Skier1@ix.netcom.com Digging for roots in the Garden State

I bookmarked a list such as you describe at: http://www.genealogy-quest.com/ (click on "collections") Its a long list, and I think it has towns other than those you mentioned.
Dear friends, My experience with Plattsburg gave rise to thoughts of recording town name changes. I discussed this with Joe Patterson and he can set up a place on our archives. If any of you know of towns in NJ whose names have changed and would be kind enough to send them on to me, I will put them in list form and send them off to Joe, who will post them in our web Archives. I had thought of this before, and recorded (for personal use) the town name changes I found in Ellis' "History of Monmouth Co., NJ." Below is my start for the list from this and a couple of other books. I've moved from Monmouth about 30 yrs. ago, so if someone spots an error, please let me know. I won't be offended at the correction. Because Monmouth is so connected to Burlington, Ocean, Mercer & Middlesex through family movements, I'm posting this project to those lists, too. With that in mind, attach county names to your submissions. Nancy -- I have Rachel (as a Drake) in my files, as the wife of Fitz Randolph Drake, and my reference is Louise Aymar Christian's book. This is not my line [though I have both Fitz Randolphs and Drakes], but I am quite interested in the source of your information that Rachel was a McClain. Beth -- Can you be more specific about which Rev. Joseph Clark you may be looking for? There were several of that name. The most widely known was the following, who was living at the time, but was not ordained until after 1770. Mentioned in Will of Grandfather, Joseph Clark (#629) Rev. Joseph Clark, son of Joseph and Mary (Mersereau) Clark, was born at Rahway, Oct. 21, 1751. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary Army, and for a time he kept a diary, which has been printed by the New Jersey Historical Society. He was apprenticed to the carpenter's trade at the age of 17, and by dint of studying at night he was enabled to enter Princeton before the Revolutionary War, but it was 1781 before he obtained his Bachelor's degree and two years later was duly licensed to preach the gospel. In Oct. 1783, he took charge of the Presbyterian Church at Allentown and in 1797 was transferred to New Brunwick. He was for many years a Trustee of the College of New Jersey and a Director of the Princeton Theological Seminary. He continued at New Brunswick until his death, which occured Oct. 20, 1813. Md. Margaret Imblay. His diary 1777, says, "I stayed at my Mother's waiting for the company till Friday." thus showing his mother was then still living. N.J.Hist.Soc. Proceed. Vol. 7 pp 94. Thanks to all the people who responded to my question about the Baptist Church in Hightstown, NJ. I realize now that I was assuming that the Cranbury Baptist Church was the right one, but I may have been wrong. Joseph SILVER and Rhoda JOHNSON were married by Rev. Peter WILSON in 1805. (They named their second son, Peter Wilson SILVER, by the way.) When I looked up Rev. Peter WILSON, I saw that he was connected to the Cranbury/Hightstown Baptist in late 1700's. I just realized that by 1805, he may have been associated with a different church. I know that Rev. Peter WILSON is mentioned in several books I've seen. Is there anyone out there who could tell me what church he was with in 1805? Thanks a lot. Another question while I'm at it - I've seen a reference to a minister named Joseph CLARK in NJ. Does anyone know which church he was with abt. 1770? Thanks. Beth BSmith7439@aol.com

Looking for the date of birth of Zebulon Tharp, who married Jane (?) and reportedly moved from Middlesex County (Piscataway/Woodbridge), New Jersey to Virginia in the mid-to-late 1700s. Zebulon's will is on file in Frederick County, Virginia. I am also looking for the date of birth of the first son named in Zebulon's will, Andrew. (I have a copy of Zebulon's will if anyone is interested in receiving it). Thanks - Brad Tharp 9679 Sharron Drive Canal Winchester, Ohio 43110 (614) 837-3141
Rhoda JOHNSON married Joseph Clark SILVER on Sept. 24, 1805 in Middlesex Co., NJ. They were both from E. Windsor, NJ. I'm looking for Rhoda's parents. Some possibilties are Lewis, Asa, and John JOHNSON, all living in E. Windsor abt. the same time. Rhoda died after 1830, probably in Montgomery Co., OH. If you have any information on the JOHNSON family, please contact me. Thanks. Beth BSmith7439@aol.com
Does anybody know how I would find a Baptist church and cemetery that were located in Middlesex Co.? The church was originally called the Cranbury Baptist Church until 1786 and then it became known as Hightstown Baptist Church. I believe that my ancestors, the SILVER family, were members of this church. I haven't found any of their original records, and I'm hoping that maybe I could find birth, death, marriage records. I was at the State Archives today and there was nothing there. One of the women working there suggested I contact the church directly, but I have no idea if they are still around. I'd appreciate any advice as to how to find this church. Thanks. Beth BSmith7439@aol.com
Please stop all discussion related to the post that Mr. Geoffrey Cooper made in response to a message. Dear friends of NJMIDDLE-LIST, Let's not start something on this list! As for the "Book" if someone needs the Book, then let then order it, if one feels it's an advertisement, let him feel this way. Mr. Cooper, has given me much help, but so have each and everyone of you who have asked questions, and given information. I just want to thank each of YOU! for giving of your time. NOW! Let's start sharing without condemning one another. Family work is more important! Just thinking on the computer. Dear Mr.Cooper, You, of all people should complain about advertising on any of the NJ Genealogy Lists! I doubt that I am the only person annoyed by your frequent and repetitive postings, until you were limited to only one ad per month. These sites are put here for general information. I get so sick and tired of the bickering that goes back and forth. I say if you have a problem with something that someone writes, write to them, NOT TO THE WHOLE LIST. I do not like wasting my time reading complaints. This is not the complaint department. So everyone should grow up, keep their opinions to themselves or quietly tell the other person. Thank you Chris.
Geoffrey, Sorry you feel that way. That book just might be one that someone has long been looking for. Diane
NJrecords@aol.com wrote: > > Sounds like an advertisment to me regardless of your connection to the > seller. > Geoffrey Cooper > Geoffrey- I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. Unfortunately, for the genealogical community researching Middlesex County, there are negative factors that one must take into account: 1) No County Society lack of a central resource for research assistance (Glenn's website does a great job in filling this need) 2) Lack of published resources (marriages, wills, land records, etc) Without these two pieces in place, researchers must keep their eyes wide open for any details/books that are mentioned. This includes the recent post about Russell Dutcher's book. I believe that a "Thank You" is more in order than a chastising message about advertising. If the listowner disagrees, it's their responsibility to address the violation of the list rules. I would hope that you will reconsider your position on this. -- Michelle Tucker Carteret, NJ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OKGenWeb County Coordinator: Cherokee Co.: http://www.rootsweb.com/~okchero2/index.htm OKGenWeb Archives: Adair Co.: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/adair/adair.html Sequoyah Co.: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/sequoyah/sequoyah.html Michelle's Home Page: http://members.home.net/famhist/shell.htm Countiss Connections: http://members.home.net/famhist/countiss.htm
