Listers: I am trying to locate the estate of the Provoost family on Raritan Bay. Its other name is "RUDYARD" Someone has said it is no longer there. Others have said the parkland is now a park along the Bay, but inside Perth Amboy city limits. I have written to Perth Amboy Public Library.NO ANSWER, I have written to the County Clerk, because the land was by NJ state grant, they must have a record of it back in Rev. War days. NO ANSWER What suggestions do you have for me? I do not have internet access, only JUNO. I live 3000 miles from NJ. I am trying to locate the land and the mansion, and the history thereof, BECAUSE on that land, right next to the mansion(which is probably not there any longer) is a family graveyard, and at least 2 Mausoleums. They don't move easily, so where are they now?? Who else could I write (Snail or Email) and hopefully get some answers????Does this county have a historical society? If so, could I have an address, or e-mail address for them? Do you think they would even take the time to reply? I am getting more and more frustrated with New Jersey. Please, can you help? Hi, I want to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes, but I am sorry to report that my Dad passed away at 4:30 this afternoon. Another WWII veteran has fought his last battle. Please don't tie up the Rootsweb pages with your responses, if you wish to, please respond directly to me. Thanks again, Ken
I recently discovered a set of 1873 magazines from Somerset County called "Our Home". It had a biographical article about the Rev. Gabriel Ludlow (23 Apr 1797-19 Feb 1878), who was pastor of the Nashanic Reformed Dutch Church. The article a lot about his career but didn't give much family information. I was interested because he had performed the marriage ceremony of one of my Rappleyea connections in 1822. I found from another source that Rev. Ludlow was married to Susan Rapalje (16 Aug 1798-25 Feb 1863). Does anyone know who her parents were or where she fits into the Rapalje family tree? Would anyone be able to tell me if the Henry McSpader on page 828 of the 1860 Census in New Brunswick might be Henry McSpaden and a typographic error? Henry would be about 30 , a carpenter and born in Ireland. The address may be 47 Washington.Possibly married to Eliza with a daughter Annie. Any help greatly appreciated. Mahalo , Kevin
I have a reference from a lookup from "Roster of the People of Revolutionary Monmouth County, NJ" by Michael S. Adelberg which includes [but not limited to]: Thomas Kerby Upper Freehold Thomas Kirby Juror, Court of Oyer and Terminer, 8/79; fined 30 pounds for missing all or some jury duty William Kirby Upper Freehold; Sergeant in Militia; Signer of Petition in Favor of Daniel Longstreet, 11/21/80 I'd like to find out more information about these fellows. would there be records available, particularly on William, pertaining to his service in the militia? I'm looking for evidence that any of these men are the Thomas and/or William of my research. thanks for any leads... kirby in NC kirbz@netmcr.com
Would anyone have access to an 1860 census for New Brunswick? I am curious if the Henry McSpader on page 828 of the index online is actually Henry McSpaden , my ancestor. Henry would be about 30 and born in Ireland. He was a carpenter and in 1855 lived at 47 Washington. He may have been married to Eliza/Elizabeth and had a daughter Annie. (Henry's brother James McSpaden is also on the index). Any help is greatly appreciated. Mahalo , Kevin
Looking for info on a John Stevens who fought in Rev. War-was married to Phoebe VanCleave--some records say he had no issue but pension files mention 8 children but not named in abstract-has anyone ever seen the actual file and does it name his 8 children?-Cheryl
I am sendig this again since I have not received any responses but have learned a bit more information. Albert's parents were Albert and Theresa Simon. He had a brother, Frank, apparently also a resident of New Brunswick. Frank may have remained in New Brunswick when Albert migrated. I have a picture of Frank and a friend Frank Kovacs with a description written in Hungarian. Other friends/relatives of the family may have been Sheranko. ----- Original Message ----- From: jsim To: NJMIDDLE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, November 07, 1999 8:44 PM Subject: Albert SIMON Searching for any info on Albert SIMON who in 1909 lived at 54 Samuelson Street, New Brunswick, NJ. > Did you happen to find any Spader listed??? The NJ Genealogical magazine has a Mr. Rapelyea marrying Jane Vanderbilt - early 1800's. Her other (1st or 2nd??) husband was John Spader (1736-1796). I'm trying to tie these Spader's in with mine -- there are so few of them I'm assuming they're all related. > > I found an index of marriage announcements that appeared in newspapers of > New Brunswick NJ possibly from the Rappleyea and Covenhoven branch of my > family. I would like to know Marriage date of Sarah Gillen to unknown groom 1870-1880. 1880 Jersey City census indicates Sarah married; however, she's still listed as a Gillen. A record "The Gillen Family Archives" shows "Sarah Gillen died from (Dysentery) at NJ (Mortality DB) 18??" ? Date of death also wanted. Also need marriage date of her brother Joseph Gillen born 1861-1864, North Brunswick, and death date of Joseph, possibly in NJ or NY? If Sarah actually married, the wedding probably took place in Jersey City or North Brunswick. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gil Gillen
The information in my posting yesterday came from an alphabetical abstract of marriage and death notices from New Brunswick NJ newspapers 1792-1865, whose main author is Elmer T. Hutchinson. I do not know the location of the original file. I rented a microfilm of it through the LDS family history catologue. The films numbers are from A-Howell 852831, Howell-Terril 852832, and Teril-Z 852833. I rented the second film to check out my Rappleyea ancestors and will have it till mid March but I can only get to the library to look at it on Tuesday afternoon. Anyone can rent these for $3.50 each per month from an LDS family history center. I asked about the Rev. Ludlow in my posting. I found a Gabriel Ludlow, preacher, on the 1850 census in Franklin Twp., Somerset Co. NJ. Maria Rappleyea, age 78, was also living in his household, so perhaps they were related. I found an index of marriage announcements that appeared in newspapers of New Brunswick NJ possibly from the Rappleyea and Covenhoven branch of my family. The announcements name the minister but not the church or location of the church. Can anyone give that information on the following marriages: 1. Richard Rappleyea married May 24, 1795 to Miss Ellsie Covenhoven, both of Somerset County. by Rev. Barclay. Guardian or N.B. Adv. 5/26/1795 2. Nicholas C.Lefferts of Bedford, L.I. married March 21, 1822 to Miss Mary Ann Rappleyea, daughter of Richard Rappleyea, near New Brunswick, by Rev. Ludlow. N.B. Freedonian 3/28/1822 3. George Rappleye, Jr., of vicinity of New Brunswick married November 21, 1821 at Middletown, Monmouth Co., to Miss Elizabeth Smock, daughter of Garret Smock of Middletown by Rev. S.A.Vanvranken. Times and N.B. Adv. 11/29/1821 I also found a number of people named Rappleyea in the burial records of Willow Grove Cemetery in New Brunswick, but not Richard or Alice (Ellsie). I suspect their religion was Dutch Reformed and seek information about churches of that denomination that would have existed in the New Brunswick area from 1770-1830. thanks in advance.
