Yes, there is a written history of St. Peter's and can be seen at Rutgers Univ. Special Collections NJ Room. The Perth Amboy Library does _not_ have their copy any longer. St. Peter's was formed 1680s and does have their cemetery around the actual church building. 3. Hi JenniLyn -- Edward Crowell (b. 6 June 1685 d. 20 Oct. 1756) [son of Edward Crowell and Mary Lathrop] had 3 wives: (1) Sarah Vail; (2) Elizabeth Frazee (d/o Joseph Frazee & Mary Osborne -- she was widow of Joseph Pike and is often seen as Elizabeth Pike), and (3) Christian Brown (b. 26 April 1701, d. 25 Oct 1749 -- d/o George Brown & Annabel Gordon). Edward's will abstracted in NJA 32:82 -- 1755, Nov. 28. Crowell, Edward, Sr., Esq., of Woodbridge, Middlesex Co.,; will of. Children -- John, Samuel, Edward, Thomas, James, Elizabeth Addleton, Mary Alston, Sarah Morris, Kathrine Evens, Annable and Agnes. Real and personal estate. Executors -- William Brown and Thomas Gauch. Witnesses -- James Brown, Thomas Hadden and Nugient Kelly. Proved Oct. 17, 1756. Lib. F. p. 382. See "Lewis Ross Freeman" by Patty Myers, page 655. Edward had no children by his second wife, Elizabeth Frazee Pike. You will note he mentions a daughter Kathrine Evens. She was his daughter by his third wife, Christian Brown. Kathrine was b. 6 Jan 1735/36. I have no further information about her in my files. If, however, she appears to be the one you are seeking, wife of Reuben Evans [or Evens], then I would be happy to fill you in on more details of her ancestry. Harman Clark hclark@bypass.com

    3. Ok, I am going to try and scale this wall another way. Does anyone out there have any information about a Reuben Evans (I believe he was an admiral in the Rev War) or Katherine Crowell who is believed to be his wife? The person that I am really interested in would thier granddauther Hetty Evans. However, I do not have parents names for her only a side note that says she is Reuben's granddaughter. Thank you for any help. JenniLyn Carnes

    3. My thanks to the dozens of people who wrote me about my family names. You are all kind and generous people. A few respondents have given me so much to go on, I'll be busy for months. One woman had my grandmother's wedding announcement and obituary, and transcribed them for me. It's nothing short of miraculous. Many, many thanks! Rob

    3. Annie -- I would modify your statement by adding that some "sources" are outright frauds, such as D'Anjou, Somerby, and Marvin, and shouldn't be consulted even for clues. As to people like Monnette (who doesn't even have the correct cemetery for my grgrandfather), GREAT caution is necessary, which is why my advice to beginning genealogists is to avoid him. But since I have many ancestors in families included in Monnette, I am curious as to which families you found clues for -- we might be cousins. Harman Clark hclark@bypass.com

    2. As with any book you must always double-check to see if the information is correct. Monnette's books gave me a clue to when my family came to New Jersey. I would have never found them without that clue. It helped me to find my family and when they came to NJ. Always look at every possible source, whether they are right or wrong. Annie

    3. I guess we will have to agree to disagree about Monnette. He may not have been a fraud like D'Anjou and Somerby, but he comes close. On my first trip to the N.J. Historical Society many years ago, I pulled his volume off the shelves. When one of the librarians saw me taking notes from it, she warned me rather sternly, and I couldn't imagine why -- his stuff looked so helpful. Later, when I had followed his false leads and his ego down many erroneous paths, I wished I had followed her advice. Then, still later, when I saw the correspondence in the Oliver Drake files at Rutgers, Special Collections, and their comments on Monnette, and read what such modern genealogy giants as Robert Charles Anderson and David Greene (co-editor of TAG) have to say about him, my opinion was confirmed. My advice, particularly to anyone starting out in genealogy in the Middlesex County area of N.J., (where I lived myself for 40 years), is simply to avoid his books. Harman Clark hclark@bypass.com

    3. Certainly some of Monnette's information is incorrect. But not for the lack of his trying , and the amount of money he poured into the project. His ideals were noble, but his recruitment of genealogists was flawed. Sometimes money is not the solution to a problem. I still find it useful as a guide, as I do all pieces of information. Some of his information has indeed survived under the harsh light of investigation, while other information has not. Dulcie

    3. The message asks: "> 3. Does anyone have access to First Settlers of Ye Plantation of Piscataway and Woodbridge, Olde East New Jersey, 1664-1714, and be able to see if it has any further info on John Brecount?" My answer is that you should avoid that reference. Monnette was a banker in California and has been called "one of the worst genealogists of any generation" -- and, having been led down numerous erroneous paths by his stuff in my early days, I fully agree with that assessment. Stay away from it. Harman Clark hclark@bypass.com

NJ Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NJ/Middlesex?read=1015 Surname: Brecount, Fitz-Randolf, LaRoue, LaRoux, Drummond, McCoy ------------------------- I am researching the Brecount Family and would be most interested in exchanging any information with anyone with any Brecount information, no matter how small. Have 3 specific questions: 1. Anyone recognize following John Brecount m. Bethia Fitz-Randolf? 2. Does anyone know anything about the Ship Caledonia? Below are the only references I have been able to glean from the web. 3. Does anyone have access to First Settlers of Ye Plantation of Piscataway and Woodbridge, Olde East New Jersey, 1664-1714, and be able to see if it has any further info on John Brecount? Thank you --------------------- A) John Brecount m. Bethia Fitz-Randolph, born 20 September 1695/7. Notes for John Brecount: Removed from Scotland in the "Caledonia" to New Jersey in 1715, settled at Woodbridge. "First Settlers of Ye Plantation of Piscataway and Woodbridge, Olde East New Jersey, 1664-1714, Part 2, Vital Statistics, Piscataway and Woodbrigde", Page 233. FHC Film #673270. iv. B) Bullard and Allied Families: Among the various families of this name to settle early in the vicinity of Staten Island was John LaRoue or LaRoux who, with several members of his family (including his sons John and Matthew), arrived from Glasgow, Scotland, in the ship Caledonia, in 1680. The ship, driven by storms into Raritan Bay, New Jersey, eventually went ashore, it is said, at South Amboy. The relationship of the various members of the LaRoue families on this ship has not been definitely established, but it is known that MATTHEWLA ROUE, ancestor of this branch of the LaRue's, was on board and married, during the voyage to America, Margaret Dor‚. The similarity of names among the children of these first families is very strong evidence of their close relationship, and their des cendants became the principal families of this name in the United States, allied by marriage to many early Colonial families in New York and New Jersey. C) History of Old Tennenth Church: In 1855 in the Amboy bay might still have been seen the remains of an old ship named the "Caledonia," which had been commanded by Robert Drummond. Possibly because of its old and unserviceable condition the vessel was deserted presumably in 1715, and a storm breaking its moorings to the Amboy wharf, it drifted away to its wreck. Some people have preserved relics from this old vessel. It is supposed that this ship brought emigrants from Scotland as early as 1685, and it is a matter of history that it bore to New Jersey many Scotch families about 1715. Some of these most probably joined with the early worshippers of the Old Scots church. D) Somerset County Historical Quarterly Vol VII 6Thomas Talmage married Mary, daughter of Captam Goyn McCoy, a Scotchman who had come to America in the "Caledonia" early in the 18th Century. The ship was wrecked off Perth Amboy, but all on board were saved. granted to us, seven sons and five daughters.7 7This devout young couple were the parents of two well-known clergymen of their day: Jehial Talmage, who was graduated from Nassau Hall, Princeton, in 1813, and Samuel Kennedy Talmage, who was graduated from the same University in 1820, and became President of Oglethorpe College, and was chosen Chaplain of the Confederate Congress. They were also the grandparents of the Reverends James R., John V. N., Goyn, Peter Stryker, Adrian and T. DeWitt Talmage. 8Hon. David T. Talmage was elected to the Legislature in 1836, and returned three successive terms. Link: Brecount Family URL: <http://www.geocities.com/heartland/woods/5514>
