William arrived on a ship flying both Scottish and Irish flags, in approximately 1853/1854. With his wife Caroline I. (Kelly) he had sons James H., John A, William, Joseph A., David, Cornelius and one daughter (a Mrs. John Howard Payne). William Stitt Murray was employed in the varnish manufacturing business in New York (City) and Dunellen, New Jersey. According to the Plainfield Courier News he was a member of the Cornerstone Lodge 367, F. and A. M., Brooklyn and the First Methodist Episcopal Church at the time of his death. William Stitt Murray died around August 22, 1933 and was buried at Hillside Cemetery in NJ. Rev. Parker B. Holloway was the pastor of the church and officiated at the funeral. William Stitt Murray's son David was a councilman in Dunellen, New Jersey, according to the Plainfield Courier News. There is also a mention of a David Murray who was a Dunellen councilman at http://www.dunellen.org/borough/history.html. I have a copy of a letter from David where he references his home in Dunellen and a home on 212th Street in Rockaway Point, NY. William Stitt's son Cornelius, had a son Cornelius David Murray, who was my grandfather. If anyone has information on any of these people I would LOVE to hear from you. I would also like to know the current name, and contact information for, the First First Methodist Episcopal Church. Thanks! John

That said, besides this one document, all information about these two people, their vitals, census information, etc. continues to elude me. I am thinking that my next step should be one of trying to obtain a copy of their marriage licence, right? Can anyone tell me where I can get this information? I am hoping that maybe the application for a marriage license might mention their places of birth, the dates, as well as the names of their parents. Thanks for reading my post. :)
Hi there New Jersey I think you will want to read how to get the marriage certificates from NJ at this site. It seems pretty straight forward. http://www.vitalchek.com/provider_overview.asp?provider_id=2920 What is the document that you refer to - not their marriage certificate, I guess... I assume you have been unsuccessful in finding this family on the 1920 or 1930 census - yes?? That would be an interesting find as it would give you the name of the complete family with ages, etc. Hope this helps... Frank, Recently I re-read a letter that was sent to me by my grandmother's sister, many years ago. My grandmother was Edna Mae Walling b.1881 and her sister was Hazel Walling. Their mother was Mary Matilda (Tilly) Mount and her parents were William H. Mount b.1832 and Catherine Flett; both are buried in Green Grove Cemetery, Keyport, NJ. William H. Mount's mother was a Bennett. In her letter, Aunt Hazel advised me that she was given a one inch by one inch bible, by her grandfather Mount and it was given to him as a boy. Inside was the name Sarah E. Patterson 1770. She said she received it when she was a little girl and it was very, very old then. I haven't researched this information to date, but I'm assuming that Sarah E. Patterson was a grandmother to William H. Mount. I was informed by someone that my ancestors originally came from the Cranberry, NJ area. That's basically all I really know at the present time. Once it warms up a little, I will be searching the Cran! berry Cemeteries. What I found on the internet regarding the churches and cemeteries in Cranberry, looks promising, but who knows. It may just be another wild goose chase. One more tid bit from Aunt Hazel and I quote "There was a large estate settled in England and my mother, Tilly, signed off so us kids could have the money. Grandfather Mount's family also owned a lot of land on Rumson Road, which is on your way to Asbury Park, NJ. I remember going there a lot. My grandfather Mount was way over 6 feet tall and trim. He was our baby sitter. He always spent every Sunday with us as he lived alone, after the death of my grandmother." I'm looking for the Mount, Bennett and Patterson connection. ALSO, A VERY SPECIAL "HEALTHY AND HAPPY NEW YEAR" TO PAT & MARK MOUNT AND THEIR WONDERFUL FAMILY AND TO ALL OUR MOUNT RELATIVES OUT THERE. Ruth Sickles, Marcine Ocean Co., NJ
Frank by any chance does your Mary BENNETT have a sister Jane born about 5 years later? I'm looking for one who md a GASTON, some of whom lived in Somerset co, so thought I'd ask... sorry can't help you, tho. good luck in your research. kirby in NC [email protected]

There were many Sutton families in Middlesex county at the turn of the 19th century. Where in New Jersey did your Clendenin/ Sutton marriage take place? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Frank, You might try one of the genealogical publications such as the Somerset County Historical Quarterly or the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, both of which have published baptismal records from many churches. For example, vol. 3, page 142 of the SCHQ has a 1760 baptism for a "Johannis Bennit" in the First Reformed Raritan Church. This is not the child you are looking for but these publications might yield something. Mary Limosner
Frank, The baptismal records for the New Brunswick DRC for the years 1717 to 1820 were transcribed by the Jersey Blue chapter of the D.A.R., and I think you could find the transcript at Rutgers ( Alexander Library.) I have a copy that I made from an LDS film, and I went through it with a fine tooth comb for 1750 to 1775, and no baptism for a Margaret Bennett. Have you checked the records at 6MR DRC? Many families seem to have alternated between 6MR and New Brunswick. The baptisms for 6MR were published in the last volume of the Somerset County Historical Quarterly which is also at Rutgers, I think. I have a lot of history books and tons of notes for the area--- can you give me a few more names? Margaret's parents? Maybe I can help! Alice

Does anyone know if the baptismal records of the New Brunswick Dutch Church in Middlesex County. NJ are online, or if they are not, where I would go to find them? Are they published anywhere or do you have to go to the church records to view them? I am looking for the baptismal record of Margrietje/Margaret BENNET. Per a family bible she was born on 21 Jul 1760, and thus she would have been baptized sometime shortly thereafter. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Frank

I've found no evidence to support that. Another line of family tradition says he was at Valley Forge and had his ears & nose frozen off. That's a little more believable, but again, no substantive evidence. I've found a mention of him serving in a NJ Regiment & applying for a pension (though I've never found pension papers). I'll check on it and see what I can find in my records. You can see what I have on Peter Doty at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rheyduck&id=I10952 If you have any additions or corrections, I'd love to add them to my records. If so, I spoke to the manager of the cemetery; they are required by the Archdiocese of NY to send that letter out to anyone whose ancestors DID NOT purchase "Perpetual Care." It means little. They do not expect people to pay for debts incurred generations ago. They do this, so you know what you would have to pay IF you plan to bury someone there in the future. Go call that cemetery. All they can do is tell you no, and my hunch is they won't. Let me know what happens, Barb
