The weather is bitterly cold and no relief is in sight for now. The cemeteries are in various states of snow and ice, the roads throughout are trecherous and if the place is not in constant demand for new "occupancy", they do not exist at all. I have trudged through these places in the snow before (for my job) but am growing less fond of this every year. Without the ability to see the section I'm looking for, it is very well impossible to find Lot #s and graves. The "trick" is to find the superintendant, if there is one, who will drive me in his truck to the correct location. Today I had the "honor" of trudging through Trenton. I was armed with a map and my wits, both seemingly useless after 90 minutes. Now the capitol city is indeed spread out into different sections and districts. At some point north becomes south and vice versa, combined with many one-way streets, streets ending into walls(!), multiple names for the same road, no signs, and other suprises. I actually, though getting lost, got to see some of the funeral establishments I heard about in my childhood and the many tales of the proprietors in days of yore. I did finally find my destination, which was situated in a warehouse(!). Back to St. Mary's and Alpine. We were all told that if the cemetery was a seperate entity, in other words a cemetery association, they would maintain records. If the cemetery is seperate for it's members(parishioners) then the church would do all records, deeds, contracts, and usually, the interments and maintenance. This is of course, predicated on the ability of the church to handle such duties. St. Mary's may maintain the files and Alpine may do the dirty work, I'm not sure. As far as a listing of the cemeteries "inhabitants", there are literally THOUSANDS of remains, known, unknown, infants and children, limbs etc. marked and unmarked, It is only until very recently that an interest in historical preservation came into vogue. But other than the cemetery company, there isn't a person or service that lists cemeteries, dates and personal particulars. I was taught you could fit 3000 remains into an acre of plots. As you can see, it is next to a physical impossibility to mak! e a definative listing. I would check Alpine, armed with all the information you can find. If St. Mary's doesn't have records before 1940, ask them where they went to? Who were the funeral directors? Most around in 1930 are gone, but a few are still in various incarnations e.g. Mitruska Bros, Skrocki and Zylka. Maybe they would be a good lead. Who knows? Isn't it worth a try? Again, sorry for rambling incessantly. Regards, Christopher

I have all the relevant dates of death/burial, but as you noted, some graves are unmarked or the markers have deteriorated. A listing of burials - which St. Mary's Church does not have - would help. These exist for many cemeteries but I have not yet found one for St. Mary's...hoping someone knows where one might be found!

Nowadays, cemeteries are like, for lack of a better term, like a large filing cabinet, 2 grave plots here, 4 grave plots there, single plots over there, upright memorials here, flush memorials there, everything is in order. In the old days, organization happened by accident. If your ancestors were poor, like mine, then they may have buried their familiy members, wherever was cheaper. My own example was that my great-grandfather died in 1935, widowed, and out of 11 children, only one had a job. So he was buried at St. Peter's cemetery in the Italian's section in between(!) two plots, with no headstone to mark. So after many months of searching, I found the gravesite and double checked it, setting a marker, where it stands today. I asked his daughter, who is 97 now, "Why didn't anyone mark his grave then?" and she replied, "We just didn't know." So a date w! ould help tremendously. St. Mary's Church on Centre St. is a BEAUTIFUL building. Unfortunately, they have problems( the roof of the church collapsed after a storm, so the repairs will take another year) St Stephen's never had a cemetery, behind, beside or under the building. Now Alpine would be a well maintained cemetery to start (only wait until the snow and brutal cold retreats) They are at, Alpine Cemetery Association 703 Amboy Avenue Perth Amboy 732-442-0055 732-636-9156 after hours and weekends Sorry to ramble on and on, but I hope this helps. I am looking for information on several generations of the Groves family that lived in the Cranbury/Jamesburg areas. The earliest ancestor for whom I have reasonably reliable (confirmed by multiple sources) information is Gideon Groves, who lived from about 1810/1812 to 1902. His death certificate lists his parents as Richard Groves and Hannah others in the family, it is a big deal. So, to get to the point, does anyone have information about this family, or would anyone be Lyons Groves. There are many references on Internet databases to the marriage of Richard and Hannah, so, although I do not have any original records to support this fact, I accept it as valid. There are also many references to a couple named John Groves and Ann (Anne/Anna) Runyon (also with spelling variations), who had children named Richard, Samuel, Martha, and Sarah (Sally/Sallie). I have never found any source besides the death certificate that connects Gideon with Richard and Hannah, and some of my husband's relatives are skeptical of this alleged relationship. They also seem to have a problem with the will of a John Grove (no S), in which his children (Samuel, Richard, Martha, and Sarah) are also listed as Grove (no S). I find it difficult to believe that there were both a John Grove and a John Groves with four children bearing the same names, living in the same, presumably small community in the early 1800s. The names Grove and Groves seem to be used almost interchangeably in many of the records I've seen, whether that is because of normal variations in spelling in an era when literacy was less than it is today or because of transcription and clerical errors over the years. To me, this is not a sticking point, but to willing to check a few records, to prove or disprove a relationship between Gideon, Richard, and John? I have never found any other likely suspect to be Gideon's father, but I am certainly willing to admit that my attempts to link these three men may be wrong.
