The John Hampton listed n the 1850 census record must have been Catherine’s older brother. Daughter Susan may have been “Sarah” that married a Benajah Mollison.

I do not have any information on the Bedell’s other than my 3rd great grandmother Sarah Bedell (b. abt. 1803) that married John Plum sometime before 1829. In the census records for Sarah’s son William H. they have her place of birth bouncing from each census to the next between NJ & NY. Are any of the Martin’s or Mullison’s male, unmarried and around the ages of Virginia or Susan Plum? I’m probably grasping at straws here now but it’s worth a shot. Since both girls were no longer living in the home by 1860.

I’m a member of FindAGrave and had tried this prior to my posting this request but had no luck. I’m also a volunteer of RAOGK http://www.raogk.org/listing.htm which is a wonderful group of people but they do not have any volunteers in this area that offer lookups. I know here in my county the local library they have all burials prior to 1960 indexed so figured it was worth trying.

Surnames: PLUM Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/zQB.2ACE/4074 Message Board Post: My 3rd great grandfather John Plum (b. 1805) was found living in New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., NJ in the 1850 census with his mother Catherine Plum (b. 1783), possibly his father John Hampton Plum (b.1773), his wife Sarah Bedell Plum (b. 1803) and his children Virginia (b.1829), John Jr. (b. 1829), Susan (b. 1833), Bonijah (this was how it was transcribed but I’m leaning towards Benjamin, (b. 1840) and William H. (b. 1847). All Children are believed to have been born in New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., NJ. John & his mother Catherine still living in 1860 but after this I have not been able to locate them. Both John Hampton & Sarah must have passed away sometime between 1850 & 1860 as neither of them is listed in the 1860 census. John Jr. (b.1829) married Mary Durham and resettled in Newark, Essex Co., NJ. William H. (b.1847) traveled west to California and married Edwinna C. Dryden. If anyone has any connections to this family or any information such as dates, parents, siblings, spouses, children or whatnot I’d really appreciate hearing from you.

    1. Re: [NJMIDDLE] PLUM SURNAME IN NJ..

    3. Back then people named their children for someone with their full name, so he would have been named for George Plum, who was usually a relative, a grandparent, but he could have been another kind of relative or an admired friend or neighbor, even doctor, political or religious figure, hence all the George Washington ____s, William Wallace _____s if they were Scottish, and John Wesley _____s if they were Methodist, etc. Really it could be anyone they wanted to pay respect to. My great grandmother's name was Anna Debinder Ayres, Anna Debinder was her mother's sister in law, and Debinder was her married name, the name that my gg grandmother knew her by, not her maiden name like we use in genealogy. I even have a relative with "double" name, Joseph Reeder Reeder, who used Joseph R. Reeder. He was named for his grandfather Joseph Reeder, kind of funny, huh? The most likely scenario is that a George Plum was his paternal grandfather, esp if he is the second born son, as usually the first born son was named for the father's father and the second for the mother's father. With girls it works, mother's mother, then father's mother, then it goes father or mother, then father's oldest brother, mother's oldest sister, etc. > PLUM .. WHY is my 3rd GGrandfather's "Middle name" PLUM ? His full > name is George Plum WOOLEY

Here goes: Catherine (67) lived in North Brunswick. Along with her was a man named John Hampton (77), a carpenter. Also listed were Johm Plum (45), Sarah Plum (47),John Plum (18), who was a carpenter, Virginia Plum (21), Susan Plum (17), Bonijah Plum (SP?) (10), and Williiam H. Plum (1). There were also other names listed under the same dwelling, so I'm guessing they lived in a multifamily home, or an apartment. Good luck.
