    3. Larry, I'm not sure exactly how far back the index goes, but it is a great resource. Unfortunately, it is not on-line. You have to go to the NJ State Archives in Trenton, NJ and search their card catalog index of newspapers. You can find all kinds of major events, not just weddings, in the index. The index is by last name and includes all Trenton-area newspapers. The entry will give you a newspaper name, date and page number and then you have to go to microfilm to find the actual record. The early marriage announcements in the newspapers seem to have been pretty sparce on information other than the names of the people being married, the place where they were married, the name of the minister (can help you find the church) and perhaps where they are from. If you get lucky you can get the names of the parents. There are also some early returns of marriages although as early as 1819 it was not required to register your marriage with the state. I'm not sure if the archives will check this through the mail for you, but they do check returns of marriage (state records). You can see their web site for info. and the form. In case you aren't familiar with the archives I pasted contact info. below. I have just read a posting that implied there were announcements there in 1819. Regards, Larry Covert Mobile, Alabama
