I think his name was Charles, my year book only says "Mr. C. Mallet". Allentown is not far from Trenton (we used to shop in Trenton). I don't know where Mr. Mallet lived, but he could very well have been related to your Charles Mallet. He was probably born in the twenties. Anita

    1. Slaveowners
    2. Mary Jo C. Martin
    3. In the Hunterdon marriage index that many of you have seen, there is an appendix entitled "Slaves and Negroes." I thought it might be helpful to post the names of the slaveowners. This is an area which I haven't seen explored on this list in some time, and it is certainly interesting (and tragic) from a family history point of view. I've also included the year of the marriage to give you a time frame on the slaveowners. From: Marriage Records of Hunterdon County New Jersey 1795-1875, Vol. 1, Being an Index to the marriages recorded in the office of the County Clerk at Flemington, NJ, by Hiram E. 1. McGURTY, 1866 Mercer Co.
    2. Mary Jo C. Martin
    3. I am writing to ask whether anyone might do a lookup for me in the 1870 federal census index for NJ. I would love to find Susan McGURTY [McGuity, McGinty?]. She is described as "of Mercer County, N.J." on 20 November 1866 in Susannah DEVER's Claim for Increase of Widow's Pension. She and Susannah's brother, Thomas HARRITY, were witnesses to Susannah's signature. Both witnesses stated that they had been personally acquainted with Susannah for "five years last past". Surely her own brother had known her a lot longer than that, so maybe Susan had, too. I would love to find out what connection the two women had. The claim was signed in Lambertville, Hunterdon Co., NJ, so there must have been a good reason for Susan to have travelled a distance to help out Susannah with her claim. Susan McGURTY's surname is hard to read, so I am not even sure whether I have spelled it correctly. How's that for an open-ended query?! Susannah DEVER's origins have been a 16-year brick wall for me, and I am bloodying my fists trying to punch it down. Perhaps Susan McGURTY holds the key to the mystery. Thanks ever so much to anyone who can answer either of the above questions for me. Mary Jo C. Martin Melbourne, Australia martinsm@ocean.com.au Mary Jo C. 1. Mercer County birth record lookup!!!
    2. The Van Kirk Family
    3. Hello List: I recently subscribed to genealogylibrary.com, and found a book on Mercer County, NJ which mentioned a HARRY VAN KIRK as a son of JOHN S. VAN KIRK (b. April 20, 1838) and SARAH HART. JOHN S. VAN KIRK was a son of COL. FOSTER VAN KIRK (Oct. 24, 1783 - Dec. 3, 1862) and his second wife, PENELOPE STOUT. If ANYONE out there would be interested in helping me, I REALLY need to find out the birth date and place for this Harry Van Kirk. It would probably have been in the late 1870s/early 1880s. My grandfather was named Harry Erwin Van Kirk, and was born around 1880. According to his marriage record and a census record in Braxton County, West Virginia, he had come from Pennsylvania, but was not necessarily born there. I've noticed that many Mercer County, NJ Van Kirks later emigrated to Philadelphia and other areas of Pennsylvania. I have seen reference to only a handful of Harry Van Kirks on the internet, none of which, so far, match up with mine. I thought I would try and see if someone could help me prove/disprove if my Harry Van Kirk was the son of John S. Van Kirk and Sarah Hart before I pay upwards of $650 for a DNA test. I really need a lookup in the Mercer County courthouse for the birth date of this Harry Van Kirk, son of John S. Van Kirk and Sarah Hart. My grandfather came to Braxton County, WV sometime around 1900, where he met and married my grandmother. They had 5 children, namely: James, Opal, Margaret Elizabeth, Madaline Eve, and Woodrow Maxwell Van Kirk. Harry E. Van Kirk died in 1917 at the age of 36 when my father was only 8 months old. For nearly a century, Harry's place of origin and ancestry has been a mystery to my family. It has always been bothersome to my sister, my father, and I that we know not where we came from. I am really hoping that someone on this list might be kind enough to help! Thanks so much!!! 3. Hello list, I'm looking for Thomas A. HUTCHINSON and Betty (COUPE) HEYWORTH who were living in Trenton, NJ, in 1900. One or both of them died prior to the 1910 census, but I can't pin down a year. Is there a necrology file somewhere, as in some states, where one can search for a death notice to get the date of death?
