Rita: Thanks so much for finding the marriage entry for Samuel Wheaton. It is very obvious from the entry that Charity was not his wife, but a Gertie. The date of the marriage and the name doesn't match anything I have in my particular database; however, I will have to check the Wyckoff genealogy to see if any of the volumes (editions) have recorded these names. I'm surprised that the LDS has digitized these records. It appears that this is a compilation from original sources such as returns which were entered into a docket book all at the same time. I say this because the handwriting in the record is all the same from the top of the page to the bottom and the dates are a spread over a number of years. Therefore, had the entries been made at the time, the clerk's handwriting would have been changing. I'm not saying the marriages didn't take place, it just appears to me that this record is a secondary source rather than a primary source. Thanks again for your help. At least it clears out my 2009 email that I've sat on all these years. I finally got around to taking a look at some of my old saved mail because I was getting bored with my current stuff!! Ha! Ha! Sorry, I'm jumping in midstream. All correspondents are probably aware that Charity and Gertie (Gertje) were readily interchangeable as given names, but let me mention that anyway. No, Mr. Shafer. I am one of the correspondents who was not aware of this. And could you quote a factual source for your assumption. The names have very different meanings even. Gertje has the meaning "strong with a spear" and Charity means love or dearly beloved. I am really curious about this. Christie.... "Charity" was used as a nickname at that time. I believe the official name was "Gertruidje" or something like like. "Charity" was interchanged with "Giertie".... as a nickname. She's probably the person you're looking for. You can do some free exploring at www.familysearch.org Be sure to search different ways.... with first name/without first name.... with date/without date... as well as by filling in every box if you have the information. I sometimes get more 'hits' by leaving some boxes blank. Good luck. The Wyckoff's were a huge family around Somerset, NJ. They were intermingled with "Vliet" .... my ancestors on one branch.
