    3. Hi Kay, I'm sorry that I don't have the sources to give you for the Charity/Geertje equivalency. There are numerous charts which give such listings although this particular one may not listed. That is because it isn't based in etymology, as you just demonstrated, and many of the list are also etymology based. Instead, it is based in the unique situation of the cultural transformation of the Dutch speaking settlers into English speaking early American settlers. To the English speaking clerks and to some of the Dutch, "Charity" was the English name that sounded the most like the Dutch name "Geertje". Here the equivalency has nothing to do with the linguistic roots of the name. Renee L. Dauven On 3/23/2012 6:28 AM, kaysfo@aol.com wrote: > > No, Mr. Shafer. I am one of the correspondents who was not aware of this. And could you quote a factual source for your assumption. The names have very different meanings even. Gertje has the meaning "strong with a spear" and Charity means love or dearly beloved. I am really curious about this. > > Kay Larsen > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Stephen Shafer<sqs1@columbia.edu> > To: njhunter<njhunter@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Fri, Mar 23, 2012 8:57 am > Subject: Re: [NJHUNTER] Charity Wyckoff - Samuel Wheaton query from 2009 > > > Sorry, I'm jumping in midstream.
