I am glad that you mentioned the "Mary" /"Polly"equivalency in this discussion as I have a Mary Polly in my James family who were part of the group of Welsh Friends William Penn brought over to settle Pennsylvania. That Mary/Polly was two or three generations on, and I think, in Virginia. I am glad to know that this was a common exchange.
