    1. [NJHUNTER] Higgins School, location?
    2. Mr. Bill Hartman
    3. For cosmetic purposes in writing the abstracts for the Hunterdon Republican newspaper - I would like to know the exact location of the Higgins School , various cited as Higgin's School; Higgins' School and the Higgins School District. It was not listed in "Hunterdon Place Names" and Google wasn't any help unless I asked the wrong question! It has been noted to be in Raritan Township near Copper Hill and possibly in Delaware Township on the road from "Higgins School to Sand Brook. " Mrs. Mary S. Bond was a teacher there in the late 1800s. Thanks for a positive "township" or road intersection, location. 3. Higgins School, District 85 on the 1873 Beers Atlas, but originally district 385. Supposed to have been built as early as 1776 on the Raritan Township side of Co. Rte 579, was moved a couple miles south in 1830, still on the Raritan side of the road. When families in the north and south ends of the school district could not agree on the location, it was split into two schools with one located in Sand Brook. Actually, according to Egbert Bush, the southern families moved the schoolhouse in the dark of night closer to them, which astonished the northern families the next day. So they then joined a district in Sand Brook. So here's where it gets confusing for you, Bill. The schoolhouse being used by those southern families was in bad shape in 1873, so it was replaced by a new schoolhouse on the Delaware Township side of the road, not far from the intersection with Yard Road. It opened in 1874. It was still called the Higgins school after Jonathan Higgins, who bought the old building and used it for a corn crib. This new building remained in use til 1911, when it was abandoned and sold for a machine shed. Those farmers sure knew how to recycle. 3. Hi Marfy, WOW! As always, you come through with a bonanza of information. I'll have to mull this one over to see what if anything I will add to the abstract which will appear in the 1894 issue of the Republican newspaper! Perhaps, I'll add all of it with your permission. Many thanks and hopefully the 200 or so faithful researchers who come back each month to review that newspaper, which is taking shape on the Internet, will read your wonderfully detailed report noted below.
