    2. One has only to read the ads in old papers to discover that while salaries were "low" by todays standards, so were prices. Things were probably as affordable or more so than they are today. In 1940, my grandparents were renting a wonderful old house in Califon for $12/month. That house, which still stands today, wouldn't rent now, I am guessing, for less than $1500/month. -----Original Message----- From: Alberta James Daw <ajdaw@swbell.net> To: njhunter <njhunter@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Apr 16, 2012 12:43 am Subject: Re: [NJHUNTER] Enumerator Instructions - 1940 Census re the $900 salary in 1939. That would have been a very decent amount f money in those days. Money has become so devalued over the years hat it is hard to understand what a dollar would have bought. n 1952 my first teacher's salary for the year was $2600; and I could ive on it!
