A little while ago, a list member wanted to verify that his/her ancestor owned a place where Geo. Washington slept. While this in no way answers that question, I came across something curious. On a daily calendar on my desk at work, the following factoid: At last count, 1,013 U.S. buildings have a sign that reads "George Washington slept here." --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Stay connected, organized, and protected. Take the tour
George Washington didn't necessarily sleep there. He had his "headquarters" there for 4 days during the Rev. War. I have found the reference for it in the old book printed in 1881 called "The History of Hunterdon and Sumerset Counties, New Jersey with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of its Prominent Men and Pioneers," compiled by James P. Snell. It's on microfilm now or you can pay over $700.00 to purchase this history through Bookfinder.com (don't put an s on Bookfinder or you will get a "porn" site). It also states that my uncle, John A. Carroll, owned the lands in 1881, willed to him by his grandmother, whose father was the one who owned the property where George made his "headquarters" in Headquarters (once a hamlet, now a spot in the road), NJ.
