John WOORTMAN (probably WORTMAN, and possibly my ancestor) was accused of treason in New Jersey in 1778. He's listed in Jones's book, LOYALISTS OF NEW JERSEY (1928), but no county is named. The man and his wife & 4 children were sent on the Spring Fleet to New Brunswick, Canada, in 1783 and he got land there. He was accused of being the ringleader of a group who were planning to capture some patriots and deliver them to Col. Butler and the Indians. I can only imagine that they were planning to take their captives by boat up the Delaware so he would most likely have been in one of the western New Jersey counties. The man who accused him was Isaac Thompson, who paid taxes for land in Gloucester County, but there were Wortmans in Hunterdon County. In fact, I have found about five men named John Wortman at that time, in various counties, but they don't fit, for one reason or another. Several were still in New Jersey after the Revolution. Does anyone have any idea where I should look next? Charlene in Oregon
