    3. I am seeking written documentation Hugh Staniland, aka Hue Stanland, Hugh or Hue Staneland/Stanaland and his wife Johanna or Joanna. Records requested are 1722 Tax List for Hunterdon County and court minutes for December 27, 1727. If the records still exist request confirmation for Johanna or Joanna Staniland, aka Stanaland/Staneland of her membership with the Hopewell Old School Baptist Church. The cost for copies and postage will be refunded. Respectfully, Darrel R. Bell Florida

    3. Hello Mr. Bell, I don't have complete answers to your inquiry, but I am writing to let you know what I do have. Snell's "History" gives one reference to "Hue Standland" on p. 185 and says the 1722 tax-roll shows him as the owner of 9 cattle and horses, 2 sheep, and 50 acres of land. You probably already have this information. I have been trying to track down the location of the original copy of this tax-roll, but the County clerk and the County archivist say their records don't go back that far. The County Clerk does have Court of Common Pleas (like a small-claims court) minutes back to 1715, but I just called there, and they have a record of a Thomas Standland, but no Hugh. You did not mention what court, but if it was a state/colonial court, you might try the New Jersey judicial archives at this site: http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/webcat/judiciary.html. The Hopewell Old Baptist church no longer exists as a congregation. I am not sure where the Baptist archives might be, but I am trying to find out. I could find no references in our holdings to Johanna/Joanna Stanland. While looking for court records, I tried "The Burlington Court Book: A Record of Quaker Jurisprudence in West New Jersey, 1680-1709." Hunterdon County was formed out of Burlington County in 1715. There are several references to a Hugh Staniland living in the township of Nottingham, a town just south of the Hunterdon County boundary at that time and that was absorbed into Trenton in 1856, so it no longer exists. In 1684 he is listed as the owner of 100 acres "certaine." In March, 1687, "Upon the Information of the Justices from Nottingham, Concerning a Bastard Child being Borne of the body of Joan Heath and found dead at the house of Hugh Staniland; The Bill or Information by the Grand Jury found presentable. Hugh Staniland and Mathew Clayton bound for the appearance of the said Joan Heath next Session." Heath was indicted and Staniland and Clayton were called as witnesses. "Joan Heath according to the Recognizance given 12th 3d Mo. last appeares upon Indictment And by the Grand Jury the Indictment found. Joan Heath Arraigned and to the Indictment pleads that Shee is guilty of beareing a bastard child, but not guilty of Murdering it: And referrs the Tryall to God and the Countrey. The Traverse Jury [I am not sure what this is] haveing the Judgment and verdict of the Inquest taken upon the same by the Magistrates at the Falls: Bring in their Verdict, that the said Joan Heath they finde her guilty of bearing a bastard child contrary to the Lawe, but not Guilty of Murdering it.... And for Joane Heath the Court order That shee shall be whipt at the tyme above said [the next Sixth day betweene the howers of 11 and 12] on the bare back betweene the places aforesaid [from John Cripps house to the River] And to have Thirty nyne lashes or stripes severely laid on. or that shee shall serve five yeares service or pay Tenne pounds." In 1688 is this record, "Ordnary keepers Lycenced ... Hugh Staniland at Nottingham," and in November of that year he is a juror on the Court of Common Pleas. This email is longer than I expected because of the Joan Heath case, but I strongly suspect that if your Hugh Staniland is not the tavern-keeper, then he is the son of the tavern-keeper. I will let you know more as I find out more information.
