Found on-line: Notes from the Township Historian: The Sutton/Mason Farm By Marfy Goodspeed From September 1994 ''...Part of Daniel Robins' tract was acquired by Jonas Sutton before 1744. Sutton's gravestone can still be found in the graveyard located in the Robin Hill II development. It reads "J S / 1797 / Agd 76." Sutton was born in Piscataway, NJ on April 18, 1721, the eighth child of Richard Sutton and Sarah Runyon. Jonas Sutton's house, which has long since been torn down, was described as being "a long inn-like structure, the first story built of stone surfaced with plaster, and the second story of wood. There is a verandah the full length of the second story front, the house being built on the side of a hill. Originally a lane led from the buildings to the Flemington highway [Rte 579]; but the only present [1935] approach is by way of another long and neglected lane, a continuation of the lane of a neighboring farm, in from Sand Brook." Jonas Sutton married twice and had nine children. There is little doubt that the graves of his two wives are located in the Sutton Burying Ground, but their stones are gone. Another gravestone reads: "J S 1795". This belongs to John Sutton, who was born on July 25, 1748, the son of Jonas Sutton and his first wife. John Sutton bought himself a farm and raised his family in Kingwood, a mile west of Locktown, but was buried on the farm where he was born. Jonas Sutton wrote his will on March 25, 1797, leaving his land to his wife Elizabeth. The farm came to his son Amos Sutton, a Revolutionary War veteran who deserted at the age of 15. He ran a tannery and a distillery on the farm and died on April 6, 1828 at the age of 63, according to his gravestone. Next to him is his wife Jane who died March 15, 1834, age 69. Being a widow, she was identified as "Relict" of Amos Sutton. She was the daughter of John Robins and Catherine Pegg and the great-granddaughter of Daniel Robins of Woodbridge. [Jane Robbins-Sutton, b. 1765-d. Mar. 15, 1834] Amos and Jane Sutton had a daughter Delilah, who married Archibald Buchanan. His gravestone shows that he died on April 20 1819, age 29. Delilah's stone is missing. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn Boutwell" <aboutwell2@cox.net> To: <NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 9:56 PM Subject: Re: [NJHUNTER] SUTTON/ROBINS > In Marriage Records of Hunterdon County, New Jersey 1795-1875 by Hiram E. > Deats, there is a marriage by Nathan Sutton to a Catherine Lake on 29 May > 1819. Could this be a second marriage or perhaps a son's marriage.
