He was born June 3, 1927 in the Van Syckel section of Union Township to Joseph Van Syckel Martin and Ellen Stevenson. He was a direct descendant of Aaron Van Syckel, who was a presidential elector in 1820 for James Monroe, the United States' fifth president.
