Leslie, I can't claim much credit personally for information on the Hess family in Bethlehem Township and am grateful to Fred Sisser III for the research which he did in 1992--most notably, he located the tax rateable lists for Bethlehem Twp.from 1778 through 1790 showing John Martin Hess and Leonard Martain Hess (adjoining properties). However, it is the whereabouts of John Martin Hess before that time that I am now most concerned about, in an effort to learn when he came to this country and from where. About Leonard Martin Hess's gravestone--the Spring 1991 issue of the Hunterdon County Historical Society Newsletter carried a listing of the subscription list in 1795 for the Bethlehem Presbyterian Churchyard. I was delighted to find that John Martin Hess and Leonard Martin were on the list and next to one another.(I must insert that during the Revolutionary War, this family dropped the Hess name because of the depredations committed by the Hessian soldiers and were known by the name of Martin. After the war, they (except for Leonard, who retained the Martin name in his will and on his marker) took back the Hess name.) Then, when Fred Sisser sent his report, he included a picture of Leonard Martin's marker in the Bethlehem Presbyterian Cemetery. I've never met Mr. Sisser, but his research has been highly praised on the Hunterdon listserv in the past. Apparently he deserves it.
