Sharon I too am interested in this family. I think that William's sister Sarah shown in the records you refer to may have been the Sarah Rockafellow who married Charles Johnson in Hunterdon County 20 June 1802. I'm trying some way to confirm this. Charles and Sarah are my gig-grandparents. Can you confirm? Or anyone else? Thanks for your help. I am looking for military info for William L. Hoffman who was born January 20, 1900 in New Jersey and is said to have served two different "stints". One in World War I. I cannot find a WWI draft registration record for him. Since he was not 18 until January 20, 1918, would he not have been "drafted" and thus not included in the Draft Registration data bases? And would those who volunteered, rather than being drafted, be found in some other database or source? His second "stint" is known to include the date of Aug 27, 1928 when he wrote a letter from Co. A 30th Inf., Fort Barry, California. Does anyone know of other sources I can check for this person? Thanks for any help or suggestions. Rich Lowe
Rich, I am a Kitchen researcher, and recently completed my book, 1635 to 1975. However, I have some Rockafellars in my computer, one of which married a Kitchen. For what it's worth, here is the line which I have: Peter Rockafellar, unknown birth date. Son, John, born 1742, married Margaret Kitchen (1767) John & Margaret Rockefeller had the following children: Mary (1768), Godfrey (1769), Samuel (1771), Peter (1772), Maraget (1774), Anna (1778), John (1779), Henry (1781), William (1784), and Sarah (unknown birth date). John died in 1832. I have this family living mostly in Sargeantsville. This may be a different line from what you are researching! I'm currently researching the Lockhart family of Mount Bethel, Northampton County, PA. I am descended from Ephraim Lockard (or Lockhart, etc.) who was born there in 1799. It appears that the family in the area began with David (abt. 1825 - 1813) and Alexander (abt. 1825 - 1812) Lockhart. There are a couple of connections to New Jersey from other early settlers in Mount Bethel: The Lockharts are mentioned as early settlers at Martin's Creek, along with several other families in the "Scotch Irish of Northampton County." One of the important early settlers was Samuel Rea. The book says that he was born in New Jersey in 1732 before moving to Mount Bethel in 1759. Another important settler was Alexander Hunter. I found an account from a nephew of Alexander Hunter that mentions the Hunters went to New Jersey. I found a few Lockhart families in New Jersey around the time that the the original Lockharts of Northampton County PA were born (about 1725), and I was wondering if the Lockharts might have settled in New Jersey before going to Northampton County, PA. There is a land warrant record for David Lockhart in PA in 1755 at the Forks of the Delaware. It is the earliest land record that I have found in PA for this Lockhart family. There are a few land warrants for both David and Alexander in the 1760s in the same area. It seems that the Lockharts could have followed a similar timeline to that of the Rea family. Is anyone familiar with the Lockhart families of early New Jersey? Did David and Alexander move from NJ to PA? Are there any Davids or Alexanders born in NJ that might fit with those who settled in Northampton County? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or information! ~Michael Messinger~ -- "Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation." ~Robert Kennedy~
Dear Eva, Regarding the "famous Goodspeed" who published histories of the southern states, I am not closely related as far as I know. However, all USA Goodspeeds are related, if you go back to 1639. I have Albertus Myers, born to Johannes Albertus Mires and his wife Catharine, although there is no will recorded for this Johannes. He probably died about 1775 in Kingwood Township, Hunterdon Co. Among his children I do have a Peter, as brother to Albertus Myers. This Peter was taxed as a single man with his mother Catharine Mires in Amwell Township in 1780, but I know nothing of him after that. And I have no information that a Henry Mires/Myers was a son of Johannes and Catharine. The Peter Mires who was named executor of the will of Casper Stapel in 1766 had to have been born around 1740, which may make him too young to be the son of Johannes Mires. Casper Stapel identified Peter Mires as a friend who used to live with him; he left him £6 and his bible, and if he die, the same to go to Peter’s wife [not named]. Which means Peter had to be at least 20 years old in 1766, and was probably more like 30, which means born in 1736. Which makes him probably too old to be a son of Johannes and Catharine. But I can't be sure. I have a note that Peter Mires may have been married to Mary Hibbs (1762-1826), daughter of Jacob Hibbs, but don't have a source for that. As for other children of Johannes and Catharine Myers, I do not have any mention of an Elijah, although their son Cornelius did have a son of that name. And the person you identify as John Jr., married to a Sarah, does not match the John Myers I have at all. Mine remained in Hunterdon, served in the Amwell militia during the Revolution, married 1) Rebecca Wolverton, and 2) Christian [unknown], and had children Anna, Elizabeth, Simon, Francis and Catharine. This John Myers died in Kingwood Twp. in 1841 and was buried in Locktown. This doesn't help you much. Sorry I can't make the connection with Alleghany Co. Eva, If I may step in here, I continue to trust whatever Marfy has to say! But, I'd suggest you might consider taking the "famous Goodspeed" commercial material with a grain or two of salt. My experience comparing their data with what I know from my family's public records gives me real pause. Their product seems to be hyperbolic 'puff pieces', designed to extoll the "traditional moral values" of the time, as exemplified by the subjects' (enhanced) lives, with minor elements sometimes raised to near heroic levels (let me tell you sometime). Somewhere in the glittery chaff may lie grains of nourishment worth ferreting out. I thought I’d jump in here. I don’t know if this is any help to anyone but I have the Revolutionary War Pension Record for Alburtus Myers. Hope someone can glean something of use. Genealogically this is the info: Anna Myers is the widow of Alburtus Alburtus was born on 26 Jun 1751 and died on 22 Jan 1838 Anna and Alburtus were married 9 Dec 1784 Children were: Elizabeth Miers b. 1 Dec 1785 Sarah Miers b. 4 Aug 1787 John Miers b. 1 Jan 1789 Peter Miers b. 22 Sep 1790 Pamelia Miers b. 13 Nov 1792 Catharine Miers b. 18 Nov 1796 Cornelius Miers b. 18 Nov 1796 Anne Miers b. 10 Sep 1799 On 7 Jan 1843 Cornelius Mires appeared before the justice of the peace of Hunterdon County. He was 47. He made the following declarations in order to obtain the benefits granting pensions to widows. He was the son of Alburtus Myers & Ann his wife. On behalf of himself & the other children petition to claim the pension his father was receiving at the time of his death. Mother, said Anna died on 25 Nov 1841 leaving the following children: Cornelius Mires, John Mires, Pamela wife of Isaac Godman (or Godwin – not clearly legible), Catherine wife of Philip Rake & Anne wife of John Cain. The remaining pages contain Alburtus’ application for the pension dated 28 Sep 1833. It is stated that Alburtus was 82 on 26 Jun last. On this same date an affidavit from John Myers (age 73) stating that he is his brother who belonged to the same company during the war. I am a descendant through Alburtus’ son John. Carol Parks

Thank you, very much Helen. I searched and found my copy of the Peter Williamson family m1, to Charity Gulick and m2 to Jane Britton. That was copied by Jennie Williamson, May 10, 1844 and by H. e. Deats, July 17, 1941 at the home of George Myers, 77 bonnell St., flemington, NJ. Lord knows what happened, I had copied most of those dates, but not all. Marfy: Since having a message from you, I see your name on a number of Internet connections having to do with Hunterdon County. I have to ask: Do you have a connection to the famous Goodspeed who has histories published in those southern states where I have roots? My best guess is that Alburtis Myers, b. 1751 in Amwell, Hunterdon Co., who is published in http://ghegodowns.com/d12/i0001494.htm is a brother to Henry Myer who went to Allegany Co. MD with my Peter Myer (who m. Anna Peters) and may be a brother to Peter. This Henry Myer d. 1818 in Allegany Co. and is believed to have married Julianna Unknown. I pulled from my files yesterday a sheet that lists Henry Myer's children as: Peter, Barbara, Enoch, Rosanna, Upton B., and Anna (who m. Charles Broadwater). Unfortunately, I neglected to cite where I received this information. A second sheet attached to it notes Peter Myer/Mires was in Amwell Twp. in Feb. 1766. See will of Casper M. Stapel, Vol. 33, p. 415. Again, I did not cite the source of this latter note. On this second sheet it lists Johann Myer who had children: Peter, Cornelius, Simon, Alburtus, John, and Elijah. In addition, it mentions Johann's son John m. Sarah Unknown and is mentioned in will of Allegany Co.. MD 12 Aug. 1829 B:401. His children are Eli, John, Peter, William, Elizabeth (who m. Joseph Stafford), Sally (who m. Peter Speelman), and Mary (who m. William Vickroy). Maybe someone who is working on the Myer/Myers line in Hunterdon Co. may connect to one of these. I apologize for the lack of sources, but I have learned better through the years. EWM
Sorry to be so slow to answer. But we only got our power back a couple days ago. The Myers are terribly hard to research in Hunterdon County. Perhaps they were following the German tradition of keeping things to themselves rather than get entangled with local government. The trip to Germany sounds like it was quite wonderful. Marfy: Thanks for the info. I appreciate any further info on Peters or Myer. My husband and I have been to the village in Germany where the Peters came from (Sinn) and visited the Protestant church they attended in Herborn. This was very meaningful to my husband who descends from four German lines. All of them I have information on (including where in Germany they came from) except the Myer family. I have worked for years with little results. Surely there is someone somewhere who knows about the family surrounding Peter Myer. I might mention that the Allegany Co. Myer family changed their spelling to Myers. I have noticed that most of the Myers in Hunterdon Co. have the "s" as well. I always take that into consideration.
