    1. [NJHUNTER] Shafer/Shepherd Families
    2. Marfy Goodspeed
    3. I recently got a request on my website for information about this family. I've been drafting an answer and find that it is so long, I might make it a separate post. Before I do, I thought I'd see if there are any researchers out there who are also interested in these people. Here is the request: Keith Shepherd <kshepherd@yahoo.com> 1/3/2012: Do you happen to have any information on the German or Dutch Shafer/Shepherd familes of Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, NJ starting from about the mid 1750's? I've been to the Hunterdon County Historical Society several times and found a few files on them but there are a lot of missing pieces. I'm trying to track down the first Shafer/Shepherd to arrive in 1754. The tradition is that he died on shipboard on his way over from Germany but his wife Margaret and their 4 children named John, Henry, Peter & possibly Richard (he may have been in his Mother's womb) carried on to Amwell. She later married Andrew Bearder, who was on the ship with them when he traveled to America. Some of the unknowns--Did Shafers or Shaffers actually change their name to Shepherd? Did Margaret Shafer really have four children? I do have information on Margaret's second husband, George Henry Wambaugh, and other information provided in the *History of East Amwell*. Thanks for any help. Marfy *Marfy Goodspeed **marfyg@gmail.com** Goodspeed Histories http://goodspeedhistories.com/ *

    1. Re: [NJHUNTER] Bellis-Rockafellow
    2. Marfy Goodspeed
    3. Hi Dennis, Thanks for checking the census records. Keeping these Adam Bellis' sorted out is a challenge (wonder where Roz Bellis is). But you have clarified for me that the Adam Bellis who married Margaret Rockefellow was not the one who published the Hunterdon Democrat. Here are the three contemporary Adams: Adam Bellis of Lebanon Twp. married Mary Ann Corson of Amwell Twp. on 13 Oct 1836 [from the Gazette]. Adam Bellis of Bethlehem Twp. married Charity Cregar of Lebanon Twp. on 1 Nov 1839 [from Dennis Sutton, H. C. Democrat Abstracts]. I have a birth date of 19 Oct 1812 for Adam, but no date for Charity, other than what can be deduced from census records. No death info either. Adam's twin was William Cramer Bellis; they were sons of Wm. Rockafellar Bellis and Mary Cramer. Adam W. Bellis, born 27 Jan 1812, living in Raritan Twp. in 1841, married Margaret Rockafellow of same on 27 Jan 1841 [same source]. Margaret was born 11 Aug 1821. Adam W. died 3 Dec 1876; Margaret died 22 Jul 1905; both were buried at Larison's Corner Cemetery. Birth and death dates come from their gravestones. Sometimes the index function on Ancestry.com is very useful (sometimes not). But it is amazing how much information you can milk out of the records. *1840 Federal Census:* Adam Bellis Lebanon Twp. (4 free white people) 2 males, 1 female in 20s; 1 male <5; 2 people in a trade (not in agriculture). This is the printer, working as a harness maker (see 1850). Adam Bellis, Bethlehem Twp. (3) 1 male, 1 female in 20s, 1 male 15-19, 1 in agriculture. Adam M. Bellis, Raritan Twp. (7) 1 male in 30s, 2 females in 20s, 2 females, 1 male <5, 1 male 10-14, 1 female 5-9; 1 employed in agriculture. Adam J. Bellis Bridgewater, Somerset Co. (4) Adam Bellis Fishing Creek, PA (5) In *1850* there were actually 4 contemporary NJ Adam Bellises, plus one in PA. 1. Adam M. Bellis, Aug 7, Raritan Twp., 43 (1807) farmer, Ann 37, Martha 16, Elijah W. 14, Theadore 1, and Jacob Gilcrst 22 laborer #252-277. 2. Adam W. Bellis, Aug 16, Raritan Twp., 38 (1812) farmer, Margarit 28, Corinda 4; also Ann E. Apgar 18 and Jacob P. Rockafellow 21 laborer #329-358 further down - Peter Bellis 47 farmer #331-360, Mary M. Bellis 35, Theodore R. 8. 3. Adam S. Bellis, Aug 29, Franklin twp. 37 (1813) farmer, Charity 26, Cornelia 9, John 7, James 5, Elina A. 2 #103-109 All the above were born in NJ. None of them were the printer. This was him: 4. Adam C. "Bellows", Aug 21, Clinton Twp. 37 (1813) harness maker #92-94, Mary A. 31 (1819), Martin V. B. 12 (1838), Margaret 9 (1841), also Abner Blackburn 22 and Daniel Lindsmith 22 harness makers. This is the future publisher. And just to cover all bases-- 5. Adam Bellis, Sep 9, Fishing Creek, Columbia, PA, 45 (1805) farmer, Charlotte 39, Julia A. 17, Geo. W. 15, Lavilla 12, John 10, Daniel 6, Andrew J. 4, Isaac 1, and Martin Lutz 8 #103-104 [He was still there in 1870.] *1860 Federal Census:* Adam M. Bellis Jul 10, Raritan Twp., 50 (1810) farmer, Ann 46, Elijah W. 24, Theodore 11, Josephine 9. P.O. Copper Hill. #145-155 Adam W. Bellis Jul 5, Raritan Twp. 48 (1812) farmer, Margaret 38, Clarinda S. 15, Ann A. 3, and Evan Higgins 15 working on farm. #99-105 Adam M. Bellis, not listed. Widow Charity Bellis is. Jul 24, Clinton twp., P. O. Lebanon. Charity Bellis 35 “Lady” $0/$3000, Cornelia 17 domestic, John 15 farm labor, James 13, Eliza 11, Mary 5. #405-416 Adam Bellis Aug 22, Flemington 48 (1812) printer & publisher, Mary A. 40, Martin V. 22 printer, Margaret J. 20, Mary E. 8, also Wilson Horn 22 printer, Jacob D. Apgar 18 apprentice #575-612 *1870 Federal Census:* Adam M. Bellis, Jul 9, Raritan twp., P.O. Flemington. 63 (1807) farmer $12,000/$2000, Ann 57, Theodore 21 farmer, Josephine 19; second family: Elijah W. 34 farmer $800/$5500, Caroline D. 30, Mary L. 5. #316-345 Also #314-343, David Bellis 91 retired farmer, Rachel 85 keeping house, with Sarah TenEyck 30 servant. Adam W. Bellis Jun 11, Raritan, P. O. Flemington 58 (1812) farmer $17,000/$5000, Margaret 48, Clarinda 25, Anna A. 13. #12-15. Adam Bellis, Jun 24, Raritan twp., P. O. Flemington. 57 (1813) editor $5200/$4500, Mary A. 51, Mary E. 19 #173-188 [No Adam Bellis listed for Warren County in 1870; perhaps he was commuting?] Speaking of the newspaper, I found this in my notes--it's taken from the Hunterdon Republican (thanks, Bill Hartman), and shows a slight bias against the Democrat's editorial policies: 1866 July 13, “Newspaper Changes: The Hunterdon Democrat notes that Adam BELLIS, who has published this paper for thirteen years, has disposed of the same to Dr. Henry B. NIGHTINGALE, of Delaware Township. The Dr. is a well known Democrat of the most ultra kind, and will doubtless publish a paper which will satisfy the most rabid secessionist. The Hunterdon Gazette, this week, contains the announcement that the publication of that paper ceases with the present number, the material, etc., of the office having been purchased by Charles TOMLINSON, who will, next week, commence the publication of a “first class Democratic sheet,”, to be called The Democrat. We will probably give further particulars after the new paper is issued, and we see what it has to say.” On the subject of Margaret Rockafellow, wife of Adam Bellis, I was looking for possible families during her time period. While studying the 1840 Census for Hunterdon, I discovered an interesting thing about how the surname was spelled. In every town but Lebanon, the name was Rockafellow. In Lebanon Twp. (which Ancestry still bizarrely calls "Bennets Bagore"), they are all Rockafellar. Curious. Even the families in Bridgewater and Bedminster are known as Rockafellow. Here they are: Amwell Twp--John S. Rockafellow Delaware Twp. -- Daniel, David J. Rockafellow Lebanon Twp (”Bennets Bagore”) -- Peter, Henry, John *Rockafellar* Raritan Twp. -- Daniel B., Henry, Jacob, James S., Peter, William Rockafellow Readington Twp. -- Peter Rockafellow also Bridgewater, Somerset -- Andrew, Christopher, William Rockafellow Bedminster, Somerset -- John G. 3. I've been hoping to prove the parents of my ggg-grandmother Sarah Rockefellow Johnson. She married Charles Johnson in Hunterdon County 20 January 1802. A Rockefeller genealogy book lists a Sarah, born about 1776, to William and Magdalena Quick Rockefellow/Rockefeller of Hunterdon county. But the book makes no mention of a marriage for Sarah. I am wondering if there might be estate records for William or Magdalena that might mention Sarah with a married last name. Is anyone familiar with this family? And if so, would you have a copy of a Will or estate settlement records? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Rich from Iowa

    3. Marfy, The Adam Bellis you noted was the newspaper editor. He was listed in the 1860 Census (Ancestry) in Flemington as a publisher/printer. His wife is listed as a Mary A. at Margaret but he did have a daughter named Margaret. He is also listed in the 1870 Census in Flemington as an editor (this was of the Warren Co. newspaper). He died 21 Sep 1896 in Belvidere, Warren Co. The 1850 Census lists an Adam C. Bellows in Clinton, Hunterdon Co. The names and ages of his wife and children match those listed in the 1860 Census is the same individual. He was listed in 1850 as a harness maker. Also found a Adam W. Bellis in the 1850 Census in Raritan, Hunterdon Co. ca 1812. This Adam's wife is given as Margaret, b. ca 1822. He died 3 Dec 1876 in Raritan. Okay just found a marriage record for him which matches the date you have, his wife being Margaret Rockafellow. To add to confusion of Adam Bellis', there was another Adam S. Bellis, b. ca 1813 living in Franklin, Hunterdon Co. in the 1850 Census. He apparently died before 1860 Census as his wife Charity is listed with her children from 1860 on. 3. Marfy, What was date of your Adam Bellis' death? Adam Bellis edited The Hunterdon Democrat which he purchased from George C. Seymour in 1852. Bellis edited the paper until 1864. In July 1867, the Hunterdon Democrat disappeared and was replace by The Hunterdon County Democrat. This same Adam Bellis became editor of the Warren Journal in 1867 and served as such until 1894. 3. Per the obituary of Moses R. Dilts (1820 - 1901), he is buried in Riverview Cemetery, Lambertville. His wife Rachel (nee Connor I believe) may also be buried there. I am also especially interested in their daughter Susan C. Dilts burial location. She died following the birth of a daughter in 1873, burial location unknown. Perhaps she is nearby?
