Hi, Unless you hear the actual pronunciation of the Nederland "G" you will not be able to figure it out. "JE" is pronounced like the English ie or y. When you add in an accent to the mix, it is very easy to get Charity out of Geertje and its variants. Geertje was not always a nickname or roepnaam. It and its variants were often the female person's first name given at her baptism. Christie.... "Charity" was used as a nickname at that time. I believe the official name was "Gertruidje" or something like like. "Charity" was interchanged with "Giertie".... as a nickname. She's probably the person you're looking for. You can do some free exploring at www.familysearch.org Be sure to search different ways.... with first name/without first name.... with date/without date... as well as by filling in every box if you have the information. I sometimes get more 'hits' by leaving some boxes blank. Good luck. The Wyckoff's were a huge family around Somerset, NJ. They were intermingled with "Vliet" .... my ancestors on one branch. Hi Kay, I have no quibble with your skepticism. It was my first reaction years ago too in a similiar situation... and even today I would never take it as automatic the way I would turning Marritje into Mary. Because I haven't done it in a long time, I went looking for examples/documentation for you. Here is some of what I found and note that it doesn't always agree. Have fun. Renee L. No, Mr. Shafer. I am one of the correspondents who was not aware of this. And could you quote a factual source for your assumption. The names have very different meanings even. Gertje has the meaning "strong with a spear" and Charity means love or dearly beloved. I am really curious about this. Hi Kay, I'm sorry that I don't have the sources to give you for the Charity/Geertje equivalency. There are numerous charts which give such listings although this particular one may not listed. That is because it isn't based in etymology, as you just demonstrated, and many of the list are also etymology based. Instead, it is based in the unique situation of the cultural transformation of the Dutch speaking settlers into English speaking early American settlers. To the English speaking clerks and to some of the Dutch, "Charity" was the English name that sounded the most like the Dutch name "Geertje". Here the equivalency has nothing to do with the linguistic roots of the name. Renee L. Dauven On 3/23/2012 6:28 AM, kaysfo@aol.com wrote: > > No, Mr. Shafer. I am one of the correspondents who was not aware of this. And could you quote a factual source for your assumption. The names have very different meanings even. Gertje has the meaning "strong with a spear" and Charity means love or dearly beloved. Rita: Thanks so much for finding the marriage entry for Samuel Wheaton. It is very obvious from the entry that Charity was not his wife, but a Gertie. The date of the marriage and the name doesn't match anything I have in my particular database; however, I will have to check the Wyckoff genealogy to see if any of the volumes (editions) have recorded these names. I'm surprised that the LDS has digitized these records. It appears that this is a compilation from original sources such as returns which were entered into a docket book all at the same time. I say this because the handwriting in the record is all the same from the top of the page to the bottom and the dates are a spread over a number of years. Therefore, had the entries been made at the time, the clerk's handwriting would have been changing. I'm not saying the marriages didn't take place, it just appears to me that this record is a secondary source rather than a primary source. Thanks again for your help. At least it clears out my 2009 email that I've sat on all these years. I finally got around to taking a look at some of my old saved mail because I was getting bored with my current stuff!! Ha! Ha! Hi Kay, The Minutes of the Kingwood Baptist Church, vol. 2, mention Ephraim Myers as moderator of meetings held at Locktown in 1880 and 1881. Prior to that Cornelius Myers (presumably his father) held that postion. Doesn't tell you anything about Cornelia of course. But every little bit . . . Hi Marfy There may not be a conflict after all. It's possible that Cornelius' mother died and his father moved to Hunterdon and remarried - twice. The DC definitely says he was born in Warren County, which technically didn't exist in 1806. But I think it's possible that the family moved. Also possible that whoever supplied the info didn't know the correct answers. :) I'll see if I can dig up any info on Elijah. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marfy Goodspeed" <marfyg@gmail.com> To: <njhunter@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 28, 2012 5:46 PM Subject: Re: [NJHUNTER] Cornelius Myers > Hey Helen, > Thanks for sending out all that info.
