Hi, There is a Penwell(teeny area) on the Warren Co side of the Musconetcong River. There was or is a mill in that area. I never really thought about the name, but if it is a surname perhaps the family was in that area. Pat
Rita, It sounds as though you may be heading to the Bethlehem Baptist cemetery. The exit is a little on the unusual side. If you're coming from the west on I-78, take exit 11 ramp to the end, then go straight (east) across the intersection at the light. Keep right at the fork (otherwise you're back on 78 :), and you will see the cemetery walls, and the church on your left. If you're coming from the east, take the exit, head to your left over the overpass, and make a left at the light. Do you have any contact with Vliets in the area? I know they intermarried with my Creveling line, and lived on a nearby farm in West Portal. The Crevelings had their own family cemetery, and used the Bloomsbury Presbyterian Church, the Greenwich Presbyterian Church (west of Bloomsbury), the Asbury Churches, and also Mansfield Woodhouse Presbyterian Church, in Washington. I would imagine that it is quite possible that the Vliet family also had a family plot on their farm, as they were in the area for quite some time. Might be worth your time to post to the NJWarren List. Since the area in question falls right on the border of Hunterdon. There are a lot of Vliets through out Warren Co., and if they are anything like others in the area, they even bounced back and forth across the Delaware. Good Luck, Wendy (grew up 2 miles from Pattenburg)
Dear Richard, Thank you!! We Bowlby descendants are most definitely interested!! I had no idea and don't believe that any of the other cousins do either! If you don't mind I will pass your email along to our Bowlby Family working group mail list. Thank you so very much! Bloomsbury is Exit 7 off of Route 78 going west on 78 after you go through the Jugtown Mountain cut. The Bethlehem Baptist Church with the cemetery next to it is just off Exit 11 (Pattenburg-West Portal) on the south side of 78 just before you go over Jugtown Mountain. The church remains are visible from 78. There are only 4 walls remaining of the church. When I first saw the church in 1968, the cemetery was completely overgrown, the church still had a roof and floor and there were pews still in the church. Over the years the roof fell in and the interior was gutted. It has been stabilized, however you can't enter the church, but the grounds have been cleared. There are many missing stones, but some of the ones there are readable. If you hop on Route 78 west from Exit 11, Bloomsbury is at the next exit--Exit 7-on the other side of Jugtown Mountain. To anyone that is interested, the listing under unknown that states "Hannah, 3/3/1812, aged 76 yrs. 10 mos. 20 days, wife of Benjamin" is for the following. I saw this stone over 40 years ago several times and the correct information for this stone is (Hannah Bowlby, died 30 March 1842, aged 76/10/20 days, widow of Benjamin Piatt) It was then readable. Hannah Bowlby Piatt died in New Hampton, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Richard Piatt, PA.
i was wondering if anyone knows anything about Thankful Penwell's family? i know she married christopher shrope and all, but i can't seem to find anything about the Penwell side, i heard mention that the Penwell's are descendents of the Penn's from Pennsylvania , anyone have a clue? Her name is most interesting and i am very curious about her. thanks, teresa.
yes, Patti, a big thank you for posting those burials, helped me out with my Shrope's, although i didn't find the shrope ancestor i was hoping for, i did find his children, I really appreicate what Patti did in posting those burials it really was a tremendous help . teresa.
yes , i think you can head for bloomsbury from exit 11, i will have to look at the map again,
Hello Everyone, Pati deserves a big thank you for taking the time and trouble to copy and paste the Musconetcong Valley Cemetery burials and send them to the List. And Brian, the Scout who worked so hard to do this deserves kudos. However, I do have four relatives buried there who did not appear on the list. And they are all later burials and have tombstones. Three of them are Bowlby's: Harvey A. Bowlby, 1899-1979; his wife Sybilla Bowlby (nee Sherman), 1898-1975, their son Joseph C. Bowlby, 1931-1987; and a brother of Sybilla's , LeRoy Sherman, 1903-1980. Presumably there is a fifth person buried there as well, the wife of Joseph C. Bowlby, but I am not certain of that. As with any list, there are always omissions. If you didn't find the person you are searching for on the list, they might still be there. Kay Kay
Thanks Teresa, is Exit 11 near Bloomsbury? I too have looked through the Hunterdon Gazette online. Lots of Vliet's, but only one mention of my "Jacob B. Vliet"...his death notice in 1879. Sure do wish they would have said where he was buried ;o) ! ----- Original Message ----- From: <teresaz06@aol.com> To: <NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 17, 2004 3:27 PM Subject: Re: [NJHUNTER] BETHLEHEM BAPTIST > Rita: the bethlehem church is right off exit 11 on 78 , you can see it from > the highway, i was looking thru the hunterdon gazette online and see several > Vleit names mentioned but mostly connected to Bloomsbury and a few in Alexandria > , Most mention Bloomsbury if that's any help, Teresa. > > > ==== NJHUNTER Mailing List ==== > Visit the Updated Hunterdon County GenWeb page at: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~njhunter > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. You're welcome. You might find it a little hard to find on our Bowlby site, but if you want to you first go to www.bowlbyfamily.org there are three drop down menus.......... click on the drop down that says "Origins of Our Surname"...........in that menu you will see "Archives"..........click on Archives........... then you'll see Countries......... click on the United States........ then on that page scroll down and click on New Jersey........ on that page just scroll down a little bit and you'll see Bowlby Cemeteries with a link for Musconetcong Valley,Fountain Grove & Hampton cemeteries........click on that and it'll take you to the page where you can click on the letter of the alphabet that you want. Ignore my earlier email. I found the location of the cemetery at the end of your earlier email. I assume all those you listed were the Musconetcong valley cemetery. However, I think you skipped the B's. Can you include those as well. Thank you very much.
