Additionally, after looking more closely at the flyer the meeting takes place at an Elk's Lodge in New Brunswick. I'm not familar with the area. I assume it is close to the Alexander Library. Also, the GSNJ asks for an RSVP by October 29. I can send a scanned image of the flyer to anyone who needs it. The Genealogical Society of New Jersey Presents Our 83rd Annual Meeting and Fall Lecture When: Saturday, November 6, 2004, 9:30 a.m. Where: B. P. O. E. Lodge, 40 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ Register by: 29 October 2004 There will be a brief business meeting followed by our speaker: Meldon J. Wolfgang III, presenting two lectures Lecture 1: "To the Honorable the Board of Supervisors...": A Genealogist's Guide to Identifying and Using the Obscure and Uncommon Records of Local (City, Town and County) Governments. This lecture will identify a variety of uncommon records which can be found at the local government level that are often overlooked by genealogists, including coroners reports, public safety reports, and a host of other unusual source records that genealogists can use to help expand their research. Lecture 2: Tracing Paupers and Orphans, Sturdy Beggars and the Worthy Poor: A Walk on the Dark Side of Genealogical Research. Hundreds of thousands of individuals living in America in the 18th and 19th centuries would today be described as the poor, the homeless, the dispossessed, and the "criminal element." This presentation will discuss society's attitudes in the 19th century toward the poor and the criminal, and the sick and the elderly, and the corresponding public and private records that may still exist documenting the lives of these often-elusive individuals. Mr. Wolfgang has been featured as a speaker at several of the National Genealogical Society's Annual Conferences in the States and at the annual FGS Conference, and has spoken at conferences, seminars, meetings, and lecture series at numerous national, regional and local societies. Jonathan Sheppard Books will be appearing at this event so bring your shopping list!! This GSNJ program is free of charge and open to the general public. Reservations are suggested in order to ensure adequate seating. Please register by 29 October 2004. Special Collections & University Archives, Alexander Library, at Rutgers University will be open from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. The GSNJ's collections and Special Collections' genealogical materials will be available during this time for use by meeting attendees. There are a number of restaurants in the area of the Elks Lodge that will be available for lunch. In addition, the Food Court in the Student Center will be available for lunch after the meeting. Hi Everyone... As Pam noted, the GSNJ Annual Meeting on Nov 6 is open to the public - and provided free of charge! (Thanks for the help, Pam!) Reservations are requested so that we can be sure there are enough seats. You do not need to be a member of GSNJ to attend - although we would love to have everyone join... Mel Wolfgang is an excellent lecturer and the topics (unusual records sources, etc.) promise to be very interesting. You can get more info on the lectures and location (New Brunswick) from our website: www.gsnj.org Go to the Events page and the Annual Meeting info and reservation form are both there. I'm looking forward to the lectures and to meeting GSNJ members and fellow Rootsweb list members. Hope to see you all there. Best regards, Joan Joan M. Fritz, It is open to the public. Anyone is invited. And the room that houses the NJ manuscripts at Rutgers Univ Alexander Library called Special Collections & University Archives will remain open from 1 to 5 pm so that attendees can use their books and documents for NJ genealogical research. It has the Charles Carroll Gardner notebook collection, the DAR Collection, the GSNJ Bible records, and the GSNJ gravestone inscriptions on index cards. Normally they close at 1 pm on Saturdays during the fall and spring semesters. Who here are (say that 5 times fast :) thinking of attending the annual GSNJ meeting at Rutgers on November 6 ? The free lectures look promising. I think it would be interesting to meet face-to-face some of the other researchers who I've conversed with here. -- Marshall Lake -- mlake@mlake.net -- http://mlake.net

That is the Creveling line that my Cougle married into. Do you know anything about them or find them on any list? Any Cougle there is related so thee so very few. They are listed in the Early Germans records and as members of Greenwich Church. I have a big hole in my research. My husband's ggrandfather died in Ill 1845. The family came here to Oregon and he was born on the homestead property. But I can not prove who Martin Peter/ Peter Martin's parents are. He came from NJ married Catherine Williamson in NJ early children born NJ and NY but I have yet 18 years been able to fin parents to either one of these people. There are several possibilities. I'm afraid I missed the "O" surnames, but could someone please send them to me? I'm looking for OSBORN in Hunterdon County, Bethlehem and East Amwell just before and after the Revoluton. Many, many thanks, Mary Jane Phillips-Matz
Yes, Penwell warren county was named after thankful penwell, but the family was not from there, her son david penwell, built the mill and the house and the barn, which is now part of the hunterdon county park system, thanks, though, teresa.
Thanks for the directions, Wendy. I grew up in Easton (Wilson Borough) and left when I was about 20. My Dad worked for Easton Laundries the whole time I was a kid and his route was around the Washington and Broadway area. As for the Vliet's, I believe Russell Vliet still lives (although quite old) on one of the original Vliet farmsteads just east of Person Rd near West Portal. I met Harold Vliet (now deceased) many years ago...he lived across from Russell. I've also been to the gravesite of Capt. Daniel Vliet which is in the middle of a field on the old Vliet property now owned by a Mrs. Hajdu on Person Rd. (next door to Russell). I was never quite sure where the Creveling estate was located, although I believe it was on the same side of the road and closer to West Portal, right? My gt-grandmother was Sarah Jane Vliet who lived on Tunnel Avenue, near the double-bore tunnel. We believe that's where she met her Irish-born husband Dennis Malley who was a Section Foreman with the railroad, and probably working on the tunnel around 1875. Sarah was the daughter of Jacob B. Vliet & Barbary Opdycke. I've learned a bit about Barbary's parentage, but Jacob Vliet is still a mystery to some extent. In any case, Jacob died in 1979 and wife Barbary died in 1884. As I said before, Barbary's death certificate does state that Asbury was her burial place, so I can only assume Jacob is there too. The Methodist Church in Asbury claims to have misplaced or lost most all of their cemetery records. The Presbyterian Church across the street has been sold for other usage; the cemetery records are kept in Philadelphia but only go back to about 1887 (darn!). As for Sarah Jane, she was buried at St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery in Hampton...without a stone....but my mother remembers the general resting area. Dennis Malley disappeared into thin air. -Rita PS: where is the Creveling burial ground? can it be accessed by the public? ----- Original Message ----- From: <Rimwah1@aol.com> To: <NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 18, 2004 7:25 PM Subject: [NJHUNTER] BETHLEHEM BAPTIST > Rita, It sounds as though you may be heading to the Bethlehem Baptist > cemetery.
