    3. St Thomas, Hunterdon NJ St Andrews Mosonetcong NJ 1768-1795 5-17-1778 Robbins, John to Catherine Pegg of Amwell As written: Will of Catherine ROBINS, "More Records of Old Hunterdon County", Vol II, Phyllis B. D'Autrechy. Dated 22 May 1806; proved 25 Feb. 1818. Catherine Robins, widow and relict of John Robins of Amwell Twp My interest in Catherine ? Pegg, and family, and any Robins/Tharp/Thorp... info. Catherine, m. 1st one Daniel Pegg, John Robbins, first wife is unknown to me. Catherine would have been abt. 40ish when she m. John Robins, could there be children from this marriage? She named only her Pegg children in her will. Jan. Found on-line: Notes from the Township Historian: The Sutton/Mason Farm By Marfy Goodspeed From September 1994 ''...Part of Daniel Robins' tract was acquired by Jonas Sutton before 1744. Sutton's gravestone can still be found in the graveyard located in the Robin Hill II development. It reads "J S / 1797 / Agd 76." Sutton was born in Piscataway, NJ on April 18, 1721, the eighth child of Richard Sutton and Sarah Runyon. Jonas Sutton's house, which has long since been torn down, was described as being "a long inn-like structure, the first story built of stone surfaced with plaster, and the second story of wood. There is a verandah the full length of the second story front, the house being built on the side of a hill. Originally a lane led from the buildings to the Flemington highway [Rte 579]; but the only present [1935] approach is by way of another long and neglected lane, a continuation of the lane of a neighboring farm, in from Sand Brook." Jonas Sutton married twice and had nine children. There is little doubt that the graves of his two wives are located in the Sutton Burying Ground, but their stones are gone. Another gravestone reads: "J S 1795". This belongs to John Sutton, who was born on July 25, 1748, the son of Jonas Sutton and his first wife. John Sutton bought himself a farm and raised his family in Kingwood, a mile west of Locktown, but was buried on the farm where he was born. Jonas Sutton wrote his will on March 25, 1797, leaving his land to his wife Elizabeth. The farm came to his son Amos Sutton, a Revolutionary War veteran who deserted at the age of 15. He ran a tannery and a distillery on the farm and died on April 6, 1828 at the age of 63, according to his gravestone. Next to him is his wife Jane who died March 15, 1834, age 69. Being a widow, she was identified as "Relict" of Amos Sutton. She was the daughter of John Robins and Catherine Pegg and the great-granddaughter of Daniel Robins of Woodbridge. [Jane Robbins-Sutton, b. 1765-d. Mar. 15, 1834] Amos and Jane Sutton had a daughter Delilah, who married Archibald Buchanan. His gravestone shows that he died on April 20 1819, age 29. Delilah's stone is missing. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn Boutwell" <aboutwell2@cox.net> To: <NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 9:56 PM Subject: Re: [NJHUNTER] SUTTON/ROBINS > In Marriage Records of Hunterdon County, New Jersey 1795-1875 by Hiram E. > Deats, there is a marriage by Nathan Sutton to a Catherine Lake on 29 May > 1819. 3. Hi Jackie, Thanks for the additional info! I had not known that "Shannock" and "Neshanic" were one in the same...that makes things easier... The info I have on DORLAND is taken entirely from the internet, not from my own research, to include the relationship between Philip and Abraham DORLAND. Abraham was married to Sally BROWN who was (apparently) the sister of Mary (Polly), wife of Philip. The CROW family has been very difficult to crack. One reason for my continued interest in this family, other than the marriage between Mary BELLIS and Jeremiah CROW, is because there were CROWs in KY as early as 1782. After the Battle of Blue Licks, Peter BELLESFELT (b. 1743, son of immigrant Adam of Amwell Twp. Hunterdon Co NJ) and a man named CROW were charged by the court to dispose of the property of Colonel Ezekiel FIELDS who had been killed in the battle. This was the same CROW (or his brother) who established Crow's Station, now Danville, Boyle Co KY. These CROW were from the Culpeper VA area, as had been FIELDS. They may also have been the same CROW who accompanied Daniel BOONE into KY on those early survey trips. I've never been able to make any connection between the VA and NJ CROWs, but remain curious about info (i.e., from internet databases) which indicates that Cornelius RINGO (b. 1739 Amwell, Hunterdon Co NJ d. 1824 Henry Co KY) probably spent time in Fauquier/Culpeper Co VA prior to ending up in KY as he had grandchildren born there. Two of his ggrandchildren married CROWs in KY; these CROW seem to have descended from a family originally from MD (early 1700's) but who may have been related to the Culpeper CROW family. Perhaps there's no connection at all...just a coincidence of names...between the NJ and VA CROW families. Thanks again, Roz Bellis Alexandria VA -----Original Message----- From: Jacqueline Lubinski [mailto:jwlube@ptd.net] Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2005 12:49 PM To: NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [NJHUNTER] Jeremiah CROW; William DURLING; BELLIS Hi Roz, As I am a Durling descendent I have almost the whole Dorlandt/Dorland/Darland/Durland/Durling line in my files. The name was originally Dorlandt. Two cousins came here in the 1600's--Jan Gerretse Dorlandt in 1652, and Lambert Janse Dorlandt in April 1663 on the ship "De Bonte Koe" (the Spotted Cow). Both came from Holland and are descendents of Gerard Splinter Van Ruwiel b. 1298 in Kortenhoef, Holland. We descend from Lambert. My great grandfather William H. My info on the John/Johannes-Catherine Van Arsdale line is a little different than yours though. Catherine VAN ARSDALE has proved out to be Catherine VAN LIEW. It is thought that Johannes died in the Indian Raids during the summer of 1780 in Jefferson Co., KY as all references to him end about that time. Catherine married William Lucas March 27, 1786. Abraham Dorland-the son of Johannes and Catherine I have with a spouse named Sally Brown. They were married November 28, 1804 in Nicholas Co., KY. Is Sally Brown the sister to Phillip Bellis's wife. You did not mention her name. Is she a Brown as well? I do not know the name of the spouse of Jeremiah Crow. All I know is the name and death date of 1838 that Kathi Roff had. Apparently she was looking for info on him as well. I have not been able to connect him with my John Cray b. abt. 1770 yet, although I think that Kathi thought that he was John's father. I believe that John had a brother Christopher, but I have no proof of that or parents for either man. "Shannock" is an alteration of the name "Neshanic" which is an area of Hillsborough Twp., Somerset County. There currently is Neshanic which is the general area and Neshanic Station which is the actual village in Hillsborough, Somerset County. 3. Hello all, I am also looking for an ELIZABETH ROBINS in NJ; I'm not sure where in NJ that she was born May 12, 1753; she died February 12, 1786. She married John GROVER December 20, 1773 in Monmouth Co, NJ (he was born February 14, 1745/46 Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co, NJ, and died August 17, 1829 Plainsboro, Middlesex Co, NJ). Their daughter Theodosia GROVER married my 3rd gr/grandfather Jacob UPDIKE. Does anyone have any info on her parents? She is one of my most frustrating 'brick walls'. As a matter of interest I also have a SUTTON ancestral line: ELIZABETH SITTON/SUTTON born March 25, 1725, who married John TREMAIN (b. October 19, 1718). Her parents were Benjamin Sitton/Sutton and Sarah BUSH - both born in CT. A cousin recently sent me copies from the book, "The Genealogy of John Sutton, Sr., of Cocke County, TN & Iron Co, MO" by Russell & Mary Jo Sutton (1997). The Nathan and Moses SUTTON recently referred to don't appear to be in the index (though there are men by both names), and no ROBINS were listed. He will be forwarding some other Sutton info later. I am trying to ascertain whether any of Adam's siblings may have also tried moving to the frontier along with their nieces and nephews, and possibly returned back to NJ as well. (I also suspect his brother William, may not have died at Monmouth, but instead headed West...) I have never been able to find anything on Maria or her husband Jeremiah "CROW"... Your William H. DURLING is intriguing, however... My ancestor, Philip BELLIS, was born circa 1792-95 in "NJ" but I have yet to confirm who his father was -- there were several BELLIS/BELLES/BELLAS families in the NJ/PA area who could be candidates. Philip first pops up in courthouse records in Nicholas Co KY when he marries in 1813; a few years later he bought a small parcel of land there on "Somerset Creek" from his brother-in-law Abraham DORLAND. Abraham's parents were John/Johannes DORLAND (b. 1740) and Catherine Van AERSDALE (VanARSDALEN) of Harlingen, Somerset Co NJ. According to online databases, John sold his NJ land to Cornelius TIENBROCK in 1778; moved to VA; died circa 1786 in Jefferson Co KY and buried in Berkeley Co WV. Catherine remarried William LUCAS, who apparently was also from Harlingen. Over the years I've noticed the DORLAND and DURLING names being intertwined/interchanged. Do you have any idea if your William DURLING is connected to John DORLAND? Do you happen to know who the wife was of the Jeremiah CROW who died in 1836? Thanks again! I agree with Sharon that the "New Jersey's Sourland Mountain" by T. J. Luce is a fabulous book. Anyone with ancestors and doing research in this area should see if there are still copies available. The index is not a complete index, so one can't use that as a guide. There is much more info in there than what shows up in the index. There is at least one reference to "Cray" in the book on page 85 in regards to mixed marriages. This relative I am still looking to connect, a "Charlie Cray married what was called a colored woman". I have 5 Charles Crays listed in my file and so far I have not been able to find one on the census married to a mulatto so I don't know who he is. Roz Bellis--do we connect with my John Cray b. 1770? I have a large amount of Cray names. Due to their limited selection of first names, I have many John, Peter, George, Elizabeth, Daniel, etc. that I am not sure are the same people. I would appreciate you Cray/Crow info and will share what I have on this family. Jackie Wells Lubinski jwlube@ptd.net
