Hi Jan, Do you have any West families in the Old Hunterdon Co. list. Thank you Don Robinson drobinson41@sc.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <JanAlpert@aol.com> To: <NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 03, 2005 7:15 PM Subject: Re: [NJHUNTER] birth records >I have Some Records of Old Hunterdon Co. 1701-1838 by Phyllis B. The question was: "Does any one know if the birth records for 1810-1815 are available for Hunterdon and Sussex counties. I am looking for one George Dailey born abt Sept 1812, possibly in Sussex county." A general answer to this question is "NO". Birth records were not required by any governmental authority at this early date. I am not sure when they were required, but it must not have been until the late 1800s. The Hunterdon Gazette did not list any births during its existence from 1825 through 1866 and I am not sure when the Hunterdon Democrat started their listing. Most birth records were kept by local churches and so you must determine which one the person in whom you are interested might have been a member and then hopefully those records are still extant. Regards, Bill

Dear NJ Genealogical Community: The Genealogical Society of New Jersey is seeking volunteers to assist in placing our Collections' Finding Aids online on GSNJ's website. [More info on our collections: http://www.rootsweb.com/~njgsnj/collectionguide.html] The original finding aid booklets have been scanned and the text has been copied to MSWord. Volunteers would reformat (copy & paste) text into formatted templates provided by GSNJ using text files and as well as the copies of the original pages. Most of the finding aids are 3-8 pages in length. If you are interested in this project, please reply to famhist@comcast.net. Thank you in advance for your assistance!! -- Michelle Tucker Chubenko GSNJ Trustee & Webmaster http://www.gsnj.org
For those interested in the surname NEVIUS, there are dozens of references in the Hunterdon Gazette, one for Cornelius. Also for those who lived in Flemington in years gone by, there was a clothing store which I believe was called 'Nevius Brothers' on Main Street next to the Union Hotel and opposite the junction of Court Street with Main. The same Nevius family also had a store in Trenton at this time. It was common practice to use a surname [generally from the female line] as a first name for males. Thus if you check the Gazette Index, you will find this practice quite prevelant during the period covered [1825-1856 so far]! I also noted that the surname of "respectable" or otherwise "esteemed" people [perhaps neighbors, friends or employers] not necessarily related was sometimes used as a first and sometimes second name for males. Be diligent in your research and turn every stone and look at all the possibilities. The study of our ancestry is very interesting and will give you a better understanding of how our ancestors lived and interacted which each other. Happy hunting you'all! From sunny and warm Florida - Regards, Mr. Bill PS: Don't forget to check out the Hunterdon County Web Site, it is a beauty and our thanks to Al Sinclair for his contributions to our research.
I have a Jane Nevius born abt 1722 d abt 1783 in Somerset, NJ, buried in Nevius cemtery. She was the daughter of Peter Nevius ( have no info on him), she married Fredrick Blue. Linda
Interestingly enough, my GG-grandfather, Eli M. CONNER, had a brother with the first name of Nevius. I've always wondered where they came up with that name. Could there be a connection? > My interest in Catherine ? Pegg, and family, and any > Robins/Tharp/Thorp... info. Catherine, m. 1st one Daniel Pegg, John > Robbins, first wife is unknown to me. I don't have any info on PEGG but I do have quite a bit of info concerning ROBINS & THARP (much of which was supplied to me by other researchers). The oldest ROBINS/THARP marriage I have follows. If you (or anyone) would like further info about the children or parents let me know. 17.14 Elizabeth Ann Robins Father - 30.1 Jonathan Robins Mother - Charity Lomping 17.15 Jonas Jarrard Tharp Father - Ephraim Tharp Mother - 17.17 Susannah Jarrard Elizabeth was born on October 24, 1840 in Union Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey and died on July 5, 1932 in Union Township. She married Reuben Runyon Wright on January 19, 1860. Reuben was born on January 12, 1839 and died on March 25, 1871 in Union Township. In the 1860 census and the 1870 census Elizabeth's father, Jonathan Robins, was living with Elizabeth and Reuben (or maybe they were living with Jonathan ?). After Reuben died Elizabeth married Jonas Jarrard Tharp on February 28, 1874. Jonas was born on September 5 (or December 6), 1848 in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County and died in 1917 in Hunterdon County. Elizabeth and Jonas lived in Union Township on land adjoining the original Robins homestead. Elizabeth and Reuben are buried in the Robins Family Cemetery. Jonas is buried in the Locust Grove Cemetery, Quakertown, New Jersey. Children by Elizabeth and Reuben: i. William, born 1861 in Union Township. 9.110 ii. Mary E. iii. Calvin, born in 1864 or 1865 in Union Township, died November 4, 1877, buried in the Robins Family Cemetery. 9.111 iv. Harmon K. (or middle initial H.). Children by Elizabeth and Jonas: 9.124 v. Roger Sherman. 9.152 vi. Charles Dickens. -- Marshall Lake -- mlake@mlake.net -- http://mlake.net
Hello, It's been a long time since I have posted to either list, so I'll try again to get over one of my stumbling blocks. I am trying to find the birth records of the children of John Middleswarth, in the years and counties above. In particular, Ner B. Middleswarth, b. 12/12/1783. His birth record is for Jan Van Middleswaert, to Abraham and Matte, at First Reformed Church of Raritan, Somerset Co, NJ on 4/12/1745. John Middleswarth, along with his father, Abraham, was listed as a member during the formation of the Presbyterian Church in Red Hill, Tinicum Twp, Bucks Co, PA in 1768. He took the Oath of Allegiance in Tinicum Twp, Bucks Co, PA on 9/16/1777, along with his brothers, Moses and Henry. The three brothers, and their father, Abraham, were wagon masters. John served in the Revolutionary War in the Morris County militia, as a Quartermaster Sergeant under Colonel Sylvanus Seeley. John Middleswarth married Martha Reed, date unknown. In 1780, John paid taxes in Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ.. In 1785, 1786, 1789, and 1790, John paid taxes in Bethlehem Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ. In 1789, John is listed in the Index of Mortgages for Hunterdon Co, NJ. He was listed, in one reference, as the head of one of the leading families in Pleasant Grove, Morris Co., NJ. I have searched for church records, but I'm told that there are not many of those are still in existence. If anyone can help me to find records of Presbyterian churches in the counties, townships and years mentioned above, I would be grateful. Some locations mentioned as possibilities are Pleasant Grove, Schooley's Mountain, German Valley, and Long Valley. I'll also look at churches of other denominations in these locales, since John may have attended the church of his wife's Reed family. In addition to churches, there might be local historical societies or libraries in these locales, near the border between the counties, that might have records of the activities of this family. We would appreciate any suggestions as to online links, email addresses, or snail mail addresses of churches, historical societies, or libraries you can provide. Bruce Fosnocht
