My both my grandfathers parents died when he was still a child and the kids got seperated and sent here and there. There are a lot of occupations that are unfamiliar when one is scanning old census forms. On the entry for my g-grandfather, his occupation was shown as "rubber". Say what? Well, I finally remembered my mother telling me that her grandfather had worked at the old Baldwin Piano factory in our home town of Cincinnati. A "rubber" was undoubtedly someone who was involved in rubbing-out the finish on the fine wood used in the construction of the pianos. Doug Gordon
