    1. Lookups Please! Jan and others
    2. Carol Lucian
    3. Due to an illness and death in the family, I have missed much of what has been going on on this list. If Jan and any others who volunteered to do lookups are still taking requests, would you please look up the names CALVIN (COLVIN), DILLEY, WARFORD and GRIGGS. Mary GRIGGS, wife of Jonathan Dilley CALVIN is one of my brick walls! I have been unable to find out who her parents were. According to her tombstone, she was born 11 Jan 1814. I don't know whether she was born in NJ or not, but she was in Sussex Co. by at least 1834. Another problem is Luther CALVIN (c. 1705 to c. 1780). Marilyn Solari and Homer Calvin speculate that Luther's wife was Elizabeth WARFORD (b. abt. 1721), daughter of John WARFORD and Elizabeth STOUT, who was named as Elizabeth COLVIN in the will of her father John WARFORD. Their argument appears to have been "What other CALVIN was there in the area who could have been her husband?" As far as I know, Luther had two brothers, Stephen and John, in the area who could have been married to Elizabeth, and some researchers have stated that she was John's wife, apparently based on the same evidence as Marilyn Solari and Homer Calvin had for speculating that she was Luther's wife. The real problem seems to be that many researchers have used their "speculations" as proof! Thank you! Carol

    3. I think my copy of this seventeen eightyeight law suit John Gulick v Samuel Gulick came from Mary Hiatt on the Loudoun County Virginia list.. I don't pretend to understand it all other than it seems part of the witnesses were in New Jersey and part of them in Loudoun Co Virginia and the suit is a Virginia lawsuit I am hampered in that as I began to type this I discovered I have trouble with the keyboard on my computer and can't get most of the numbers to type....but thought I would put this out on both lists.especially the Hunterdon New Jersey list who has been discussing the connection between the two counties...maybe Marty can clarify some of the law suit. It seems to me there might have been quite a bit of back and forth between the two counties....and maybe all of it not to friendly... Decree discontinued "Plaintiff take nothing by his bill but for his false clamour" The bill is not in the file but this suit is about John GULICK taking or stealing sheep from Elizha BIRD in the "JERSEYS." There is argument about killing hogs that belonged to Francis LABARD. Samuel GULICK made oath that James BIRD, Rachel BIRD, Hanna OSMAN, all of HUNTERDON County New Jersey are material witnesses. Soposedly the orator told the defendent "Go home and steal Elisha Birds sheep" There seems to have been a previous case. Henry Gulick versus Ferdinand Gulick in common law {in seventeen eighty six} Summons: John GULICK, William STEVENSON, Mary REED, Ebenezer ALLEN, Thomas FLOOD and cary his wife, John CREYMOUR, James RIGHTMIRE, John MOORE and Abigail MOORE John and Jacob MOORE AND Peter HAND. Joseph REED of LOUDOUN says Bird and Ozborn are brother-in-laws in NEW JERSEY. depositions were given by Hannah OSBORN {Yeibe Ozborn} Elizabeth LEONARD Henry STOLL Adam LENNARD Henry LACOCK John ROAT Elisha BIRD Andrew KEPHARDT Henry GULICK Joseph BEAVERS Mary LENNARD Johanna BIRD {mother of Elisha} and Isaac GRAY { WERE THE ABOVE ALL IN HUNTERDON COUNTY NEW JERSEY? } Almerine GRAY appeared in LOUDOUN county before Thomas LEWIS . depositions were taken of Henry MOORE and Sarah MOORE were taken iat the house of Jno MOORE INNKEEPER the court ordered Samuel Gulick to pay Jacob Moore and John Gulick to pay Ebenezer Allen....

    3. The discussion here of the Sinclair family with a Snyder connection sounds too familiar to me. Have any of you heard of a Robert Sinclair, who married an Emeline Van Camp? Robert was born c 1795. Emeline was younger, b c 1813. Emeline's grandmother Margaret (Kiple) Van Camp, was first married to a John Snyder. With both family names in the same area, I would think there could be a family connection. Unfortunately I know nothing about the Sinclair family before Robert. I have only that this was Emeline's 2nd marriage, her first being to Aaron Norcross. They had one child (Jacob Norcross) before her marriage to Robert Sinclair. Emeline and Robert had two known children Charlotte, b c 1837 and James K, b 2/11/1841. Eventually Emeline and the children show up in Sweetland Twp. Iowa, along with Emeline's brother Kiple Van Camp. I do not know what happened to Robert. Some records indicate he died when the kids were small, but I am not at all sure about that information. In IA, the family is buried as Sinkler, rather than Sinclair. Emeline and her 4 siblings were orphaned at a young age, and there seems to be a huge brick wall that many researchers so far have not been able to break. If any of this is familiar to you Sinclair researchers, I would love any information! Thanks, Amy G.

    2. Alice
    3. BODINE is not my direct line...but Dave Bodine has extensive information on the Bodine's on-line. What I do know is that according to the will of Cornelius Bodine (index to Loudoun County Wills 1757/150) his wife was Idah... and one of the daughters was Orrionehe Bodine...another will of a Mary Evans from the same publication indicates that Orrionehe is the wife of Benjamin RIGHTMIRE...This family left Loudoun Co Virginia and went to Nelson County Kentucky and later to Illionois.....I would be interested to know if this family moved from New Jersey to Loudoun co Va... Also the spelling of Orrionehe has sparked some debate among Rightmire researchers...Most of us wonder if it is not an Americanization of the Dutch "Ariantje" or something similar....Thanks, Alice

    1. Hunterdon County Townships at various time periods
    2. Since there is a lot of activity on this site, I thought I would provide some information on the townships from the beginning of Phyllis B. D'Autrechy's book More Records of Old Hunterdon County, Hunterdon County Historical Society, 1998. Depending upon the time period your ancestors may not have moved but the township boundaries may have changed. For example they may have lived in Amwell in the early 1700's but it was called Kingwood after 1746. "Hunterdon Co. was formed in 1713/14 from Burlington Co. In 1738 more land was annexed from Morris Co. At that time Hunterdon Co. had the following townships: Alexandria, Amwell, Bethlehem, Hopewell, Kingwood, Lebanon, Maidenhead, Reading, Tewksbury and Trenton. In 1838 Hopewell, Maidenhead and Trenton were taken to form Mercer Co. Hunterdon Townships then were Alexandria, Bethlehem, Clinton, Delaware, East Amwell, Franklin, Holland, Kingwood, Lebanon, Raritan, Readington, Tewksbury, Union, and West Amwell."

My g* grandfather was Philip CRATER m. to Margaret APGAR (d. of Peter APGAR m. Mary ALPAUGH). On my other side, my g* grandfather is Philip PHILHOWER (m to Mary ? (perhaps LANDON). 2. That is the reference that I found in the NJ Genealogies book some time ago. I do believe that the William Beavers in N. VA is related to the Beavers in western NJ. His information says that he served in the French and Indian War in New Jersey. He must have removed to Virginia after that. His family names are not german/dutch. I cannot connect him to the german families that were mentioned yesterday. Judy Arthur

    3. The Beavers very well could have been Beviers, decendants of the Huguenot of New Platz, New York. They came early, married with Deyo, DuBois, LeFever, and those families. They may have changed the spelling of the last name to Beaver. They, also married in with the old Dutch families. Just a thought. 3. There are many different theories about the ancestry of Col. Beavers, none of which is the final word on the subject. Here is a site that has a lot of information on Col Beavers Some of the information about the colonel was provided by myself to the owner of the site. I do not trust the work of Harold Sonn as far as the colonel's past or his brief synopsis of the Col's service during the war (which I find imaginative), but find Sonn's work of the descendants of colonel Beavers very reliable.
