First - many thanks to Cinda for posting these census abstracts! I did want to let you all know that the Genealogical Society of New Jersey has a collection of 1850 census abstracts for most of the US for Jersey born residents of other states. The collection isn't processed yet and I'm not sure how accessible it really is. I think that it is still in it's original format - that is - by state and county of residence, with no name index. If you have family you know moved from NJ to a specific county - you might contact GSNJ and see if the relevant listings can be copied for you. Use the following address: GSNJ, Corresponding Secretary, PO Box 1291, New Brunswick NJ 08903. (Getting this collection organized (and indexed?) to be more accessible is a possible volunteer project for GSNJ volunteers. If you are interested in helping GSNJ with projects like these, more information is available on our website: www.gsnj.org) Regards, Joan Joan M. a few good sites: http://www.njstatelib.org/NJ_Information/Digital_Collections/Digidox20.php (free) http://www.civilwardata.com/ (some free, but excellent pay service and will give a lot of information on units, where the men came from, statistics, etc. A devotion of love by a civil war buff - basically a one-man project!) http://www.cwc.lsu.edu/cwc/search.htm GRYPHON54@aol.com wrote: Greetings: Does anyone have access to the enrollment lists or info regarding the Civil War unit: 35th New Jersey Zouaves, enlistment at Flemington,1864. Hi Gale, Only one mention of the name, but kind of a different story, so am sending the happenings of the transaction. page 52: Records of the [John,Sr.] Williamson papers dated 1791 to 1793, show that the family owned two stallions they were putting out to stud and there is a long list of people in the Amwell area who brought their mares to Bold Figure for this service. Among them, William DANBURY....et al. who all paid an average of 1(pound) 10s. for the service. Also, John Garrison, Samuel Graff, and Benjamin Blackwell were among the men listed who brought their mares to Shakespear. The cost of tack and feed for the horses might seem relatively cheap by today's standards. A list of "Money Expended for Bold Figure" indicated that a "new Leather holster" cost 5s. 9d. and a "New Snaffle Bridle" [snaffle -- a simple usu. jointed bit for a bridle] cost 6s 6d... However, we have just seen that Peter Snook was paid 16s. 6d. for three days work mowing grass, the halter therefore, cost the equivalent of one days work by a farm laborer. A bridle for Shakespear was 10s. and hay and oats for one week ! for Bold Figure was 7s. 6d. All, Have finally gotten my web site, Home Grown In The Garden State, back up and running at: http://njsuttonfamily.org. This site includes my research on my Sutton, Jones, Otto and O'Brien lines and extracts from the Hunterdon Co. Democrat. A search engine is located on the Democrat intro page to make searching for names in the newspaper a little easier. Now that I have some free time, it is hoped that I can improve upon the web site and information contained therein. I look for your input as to how to improve upon the site and any information you have to correct or add to what I have individual families. For those doing German research, my great grandfather emigrated from Glauchau, Sachsen, Germany in 1880, so the research for Germany begins there and I have lines back to 1550s. The research is being conducted by a research group out of Muenchen. Regards, Dennis Sutton
