Don't know if it went through the first time Hi All, Lorrie has given a lot of great information, here is more from the Zion Lutheran Church Birth Bapt. in New Germantown (what is now Oldwick) New Jersey. You can thank Jean E. Rinehart for the index, you can also find these records on the New Jersey web site. These records were contributed by Ben. van D.[oren] Fisher and appear as he interpreted the names. The records list the year the child or person was born and/or baptized and the names of the parents and witnesses. These were printed originally in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Records April 1900 through October 1903. Some of these are the same as Lorrie sent: Meier, Henry wife Margareth, child: Johan Georg, born June 4 1785, bapt. Aug. 17, 1785 in Spruce Run. Meier, Henry, wife Margaryt, child Wilhelm born Nov. 25, 1787, bapt. June 2, 1788, witnesses: Parents (bapt at Spruce Run) Meier, Michle. wife Martha, child Jacob, born March 4, 1775, bapt. Hello Mr. Bell, I don't have complete answers to your inquiry, but I am writing to let you know what I do have. Snell's "History" gives one reference to "Hue Standland" on p. 185 and says the 1722 tax-roll shows him as the owner of 9 cattle and horses, 2 sheep, and 50 acres of land. You probably already have this information. I have been trying to track down the location of the original copy of this tax-roll, but the County clerk and the County archivist say their records don't go back that far. The County Clerk does have Court of Common Pleas (like a small-claims court) minutes back to 1715, but I just called there, and they have a record of a Thomas Standland, but no Hugh. You did not mention what court, but if it was a state/colonial court, you might try the New Jersey judicial archives at this site: http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/webcat/judiciary.html. The Hopewell Old Baptist church no longer exists as a congregation. I am not sure where the Baptist archives might be, but I am trying to find out. I could find no references in our holdings to Johanna/Joanna Stanland. While looking for court records, I tried "The Burlington Court Book: A Record of Quaker Jurisprudence in West New Jersey, 1680-1709." Hunterdon County was formed out of Burlington County in 1715. There are several references to a Hugh Staniland living in the township of Nottingham, a town just south of the Hunterdon County boundary at that time and that was absorbed into Trenton in 1856, so it no longer exists. In 1684 he is listed as the owner of 100 acres "certaine." In March, 1687, "Upon the Information of the Justices from Nottingham, Concerning a Bastard Child being Borne of the body of Joan Heath and found dead at the house of Hugh Staniland; The Bill or Information by the Grand Jury found presentable. Hugh Staniland and Mathew Clayton bound for the appearance of the said Joan Heath next Session." Heath was indicted and Staniland and Clayton were called as witnesses. "Joan Heath according to the Recognizance given 12th 3d Mo. last appeares upon Indictment And by the Grand Jury the Indictment found. Joan Heath Arraigned and to the Indictment pleads that Shee is guilty of beareing a bastard child, but not guilty of Murdering it: And referrs the Tryall to God and the Countrey. The Traverse Jury [I am not sure what this is] haveing the Judgment and verdict of the Inquest taken upon the same by the Magistrates at the Falls: Bring in their Verdict, that the said Joan Heath they finde her guilty of bearing a bastard child contrary to the Lawe, but not Guilty of Murdering it.... And for Joane Heath the Court order That shee shall be whipt at the tyme above said [the next Sixth day betweene the howers of 11 and 12] on the bare back betweene the places aforesaid [from John Cripps house to the River] And to have Thirty nyne lashes or stripes severely laid on. or that shee shall serve five yeares service or pay Tenne pounds." In 1688 is this record, "Ordnary keepers Lycenced ... Hugh Staniland at Nottingham," and in November of that year he is a juror on the Court of Common Pleas. This email is longer than I expected because of the Joan Heath case, but I strongly suspect that if your Hugh Staniland is not the tavern-keeper, then he is the son of the tavern-keeper. I will let you know more as I find out more information. Thanks for sending that information Lorrie. It is wonderful information. At this point it doesn't help me but I'm sure someone will benefit from it and I am going to save it. There may be a point when I will discover one of those folks in my line. I truly doubt that there are any Davenports listed for that church but would you please check for me? Dear Paula, I just sent a note to your cousin that I don't have any info on Anne/Nancy Roberts. I got the name from Pat. I also mentioned to her that I combed through the NJA Abstract of Wills, hoping to find some mention of her as a daughter, but had no luck. Seems like she will be hard to find, but I'm afraid I can't really help with that just now. Hi List I keep a constant vigil of the NJ & County lists hoping I will be able to solve some of my families history and this recent thread which discussed some of the Davenport's particularly in Hunterdon cty. caught my attention. I'll try and weave a rough encapsulation to see if there are any other threads that might be able to woven into these families The name's Woolley and Davenport begin by showing up in CT and then Woolley' s show up in Long Island, NY for a period of time then on into New Jersey. The next physical connection is that both Davenports and Woolley's have interests in Barbados, not necessarily the same business/property, but in the same time period. Although I did not see any particular records, a discussion I had while in Barbados with a gentleman agreed with what I had understood in general. Now back to New Jersey/West Jersey (?) these two names come together down the stream of time One Ezechiel/Ezekiel b. 31 Aug 1763, shows up in the Zion Church of New Germantown/Oldwick baptismal record as an adult (27yrs) c1790. Dec 23, 1790 he is then married to Polly Philips/Philops, b1773, New Germantown/Oldwick. Incidentally, David Woolley a younger is Bap. on the same date, same location. The son of Ezechiel and Polly, Isaac Ogden Woolley mar. Sarah Davenport 15 Sept. 1832. They Had two children. Harriet Anne b. date unknown and Margaret b.4 July 1835, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The early part of this narrative covers a time period c1650 - c1750. I am hoping that SKS will come to my aid with additional info and of course I'll be willing to share. These days I am becoming more dependent on others for assistance for which I am grateful. There are a few old-timers to the list who know of what I speak. I want to thank you all for this thread starting, at least it put some more fire in my eye to keep monitoring. From Snell's History of Hunterdon Co. N.J*: "Tunis D. Myers* was a grandson of *Burtis Myers* an early resident of Hunterdon County. His father, *Peter Myers* married *Elizabeth Dilly*, and had one child by the union, Tunis D. Myers, the subject of this sketch. The latter was born on May 2, 1806 and passed the earlier years of his life on his father's farm." Does anyone know if this* Burtis Myers *is the Alburtis Myers of recent posts? Gary Myers
I've been following this thread closely looking for a connection, as I also have a John Myers from Lambertville born around 1835! His civil war pension records from when his wife Cylinda is trying to collect, mentions his father's name was Abraham and left him to go out west when John Myers was a small boy. I did find an Abraham D Myers in the 1850 census for Lambertville but I would think he would be gone by that time as John would be around 15 in 1850, and he was suppose to leave when he was a small boy. Although on the LDS site they do have an Abraham D from Lambertville who died in California in 1872, and had two wives. The children listed for Abraham and his first wife list a JOhn Gillingham Myers born 1816, so this could not be my JOhn. Abraham's first wife died in 1844 so it doesn't look like my John would have been from the second wife. From Roz Bellis, I only mention this because there were lots of entries in the Nordhofen records for MYERS/MIERS. Plus, I notice from an online database that there apparently were marriages between the daughter of Yost HOPPAUGH, who died in Amwell, NJ and was from Seelbach/Flammersfeld, Germany, which is not too far from Nordhofen, and Johann Peter HANN. The database also notes that other of Yost's children married into the ALLER, JUNG (mother was ANDRIESSEN), and FOX (FUCHS) families...all these names are present in the Nordhofen church books, as well as my BOLLESFELDs (ANDRIESSEN is listed mostly as ANDRE/ANDRES). Yost HOPPAUGH's wife's surname, SCHU, may also have been listed but that name has not been familiar to me in my research so I didn't notice it. Just thought I'd pass this on..." Dear Roz, This is very interesting information. I have long wondered about the Hann and Myers connection. Did you know that Peter Hann of Amwell's farm is directly south of the farm belonging to Albertus Myers (who I think got it from his father John)? The earliest record I have for Peter Hann is as a bordering owner in a deed of 1768. Also Jost Hoppock's farm was a short distance down the road from Peter Hann. The Allers, Jung/Youngs and Foxes were not far either. Marfy
I am definitely interested in the John A. Myers who married Elizabeth Fox. I found their marriage information in "Hunterdon Couunty, NJ Marriages, 1790-1895" at the NJ State Archives. There the date was given as 7 Mar 1814. They were the ones listed on Samuel's and Abraham's records of death. Leonard's parents were both listed as "Don't know" so that is no help but I do believe he was also a brother due to his age and proximity living near the other two. No proof of that however. That's another reason for wanting to see early church records - baptismal certificates would be wonderful! I don't know where or by whom John & Elizabeth were married except that it was Hunterdon County. Since Samuel and Abraham were both married by pastors of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Quakertown I think that would be the place to look. Does anyone out there have any idea of how to access these records from the early and mid 1800's? Myers. I decided to check out the 1850 census for Hunterdon County. It had no listing for John Myers, but, as you noted below, John O. Miers was in Alexandria Twp, age 61 [born about 1789], miller, with Elizabeth 57, Samuel 23, miller, Rebecca 17, all born in NJ [#213-213]. In Delaware Township, there was a John "Mires" 66 [born about 1784], farmer worth $8,000, with Sally Mires 59 and John Green 15, farm laborer [#325-362]. Brunswick N.J.] I checked the HCHS Newsletter for Fall 1984: The newsletter gives the birthdate you cite from the family bible of Albertus Myers, so I think we're on firm ground saying that the John Miers who removed to Alexandria was the son of Albertus. As to his death date, if he was the John Mires buried in the Baptist Cemetery in Locktown, then he died on 24 Feb 1851. I don't believe he is the one who died in April 1858. As to the John Mires, born 1784, who remained in Delaware Township, I believe he was the person who married Sarah (Sally) Rockafellar 15 July 1808, and died in 1858. There is an estate for a John Mires who died intestate, and whose widow Sarah quit claimed her right of dower to the heirs in exchange for an annuity. I am guessing that this John Mires was the son of Simon Mires, or Simon Johnson Myers, as you identify him. When Simon Myers died intestate, his estate was divided (about 1814) among these heirs: Peter Myers, Ann (wife of Herbert Crips), Catharine Myers, Andrew Myers, John Myers, Sarah (wife of Samuel Young), Elizabeth (wife of Elijah Mathews), Simon Myers, Christiana Myers, Polly (wife of Jacob Myers) and Margaret Myers H.C. Richard, I hope the following is helpful. Inscriptions of Locust Grove Cemetery show Elizabeth Rupell in plot #13 was b. 1843, d. 1927. Edward Rupell is also interred in #13. He was b. 1865, d. 1954. David, No, that Andrew BELLIS was born in 1855, and was a descendant of a related branch of the BELLIS family. He was the son of John and Amy (RITTENHOUSE) BELLIS. The Andrew I was referring to was the son of immigrant Adam BELLIS (1706-1761). This Andrew (1757-1843) was married to Elizabeth SERVIS (b. abt 1752) and apparently is buried in Hopewell. Philip (b. 5-1-1789) is not my Philip. I do show him as married to a Sarah, but have no marriage date and no maiden name/DOB for Sarah. Do you have citations for those details, by chance? Do you have any info on Sarah's PARKE ancestry? This Philip is a first cousin, twice removed, to Andrew (b. 1855) above. He was also the brother of the Elizabeth BELLIS who married George DUCKWORTH. Janet: Do you have a date for when Abe and Hannah purchased the property from Hannah's parents?? Also wondering where you found that information? Would like to know when, how and from whom Leonard C. Davenport acquired his property which is not far away from Abraham's in Franklin Twp. Their brother Samuel Davenport also lives nearby. The $64,000 question for me is how the three brothers came to be in the same vicinity. Richard in FL > I found Hannah's will interesting myself. Then I found, Abe and Hannah > purchased the property from Hannah's parents, John and Helene/Eleanor after > the death of her father John Swallow. Helene, went to live with dau. Hi: I copied the following from Beverly G. Kirby-McDonough's West Hunterdon County Resources page. I am would be interested in knowing the DOBs and DODs for the individuals, and their relationship to one another. Also, why Elizabeth Ruple, who I believe is the wife of Leonard C. Davenport is buried in plot # 13, which appears to be a Wene family plot. LOCUST GROVE CEMETERY ASSOCIATION Compiled by Willis W.
