Another Gano question........I had an aunt, Emma Gano Sherman, d. of Thomas B. Sherman and Catherine Umstead, all of Hunterdon County. Emma's dates are; b.10-4-1894, d. 5-4-1976, m. Lawrence Crampton. I have often wondered where her middle name came from. Perhaps a Gano friend of the Sherman family? Has any Gano researcher run into Emma's name while looking up info? Dear Map Owner; This is known as a cadastral map. It was made by Stanton Hammond (Of map company fame). Mr. Hammond used the early deeds for the Hunterdon area to draw the bounds of the various plots. I have read that it was his hobby and that it took him a life time. The dates refer to the dates on the indivdual deeds at the time it was originally owned by an early owner. That is why there are manydifferent dates on the map, There are quite a few sheets like this. There is also an index. You may purchase one or the whole set from the Genealogical Societyof New Jersey. You can view the maps in Warren County Historical Society. Also you can probably see same at Hunterdon County Historical Society. Also at our bigger reference libraries, I think. With all the Gano info being shared, I have to ask - I have a G-G Grand mother - Julia Ann Gano b. 11 Feb 1819 d. 13 Jan 1899 married to Isaac L. Pierce 3 Nov 1836 he was b. 27 Apr 1813 and d. 28 July 1891 possibly from New York as I have a cabinet card taken by Eddoews Bros 353 # 355 6th Ave. cor 22nd St, New York of each. I have no information about her parents. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Bob Philhower
Marfy, I just double checked the date of marriage for Cornelius and Sarah, and it is 23 Feb 1803, as per Deats' marriage records and a family Bible record on file at the HCHS. The family Bible does not list Bernice or Anna as children of Cornelius and Sarah. I would be interested in learning where you obtained those names. It does give a Bernice as Cornelius' mother, another Bernice as his sister (married to Jacob Hoppock), and a third Bernice as his granddaughter, through his son, Cornelius who married his cousin, Mary Hoppock (daughter of Jacob and Bernice Williamson Hoppock. The oldest Cornelius, who was married to Bernice, died between 29 Oct 1807 & 26 Jan 1808, leaving a will that lists his children. The list is a perfect match to the Bible record. This will mentions his brother Samuel, and the "unhappy difference" between them over a land dispute. He requests in the will that his executors, sons William, Cornelius, and Asher continue the effort to obtain the land that is rightfully his. It is possible that Cornelius, son of Samuel, is the one who married the Sara Gulick mentioned in "Gulicks of the USA", page 15. I have no proof of that but I do know that his brother, Peter, married Charity Gulick, Sara's sister. I have also seen that some researchers have this Cornelius married to Steyntie DeMott, but I haven't seen any sources to back that up. It is also possible that the same Cornelius was married to both women. I don't have a wife entered for this Cornelius, because I haven't found anything conclusive yet. As for the Buchanan burials in Locktown. They are in the churchyard on the corner of Locktown Serg. Rd & Locktown-Flem. Rd., attached to the church (currently Presbyterian) of the same place. Catharine's sister, Sarah Ann Williamson Carrell is also there with husband, Samuel, and several children. Hope this helps, Helen
You wrote: I would appreciate knowing your connection or interest in the MYERS family of Hunterdon County, NJ. Answer: Dear Bill, I live not far from the house that Albertus Myers lived in, and from his next-door neighbor, Peter Hann. I have a business researching old houses for their owners, and many years ago researched this house. You wrote: P.S. The marriage record of Joseph GANO to Elizabeth MYERS reflect that the parents were Samuel GANO and Peter MYERS. Your note indicates he was the son of Charles GANO. Answer: I got my info on the marriage from Deats, who states it was Joseph who married Elizabeth "Mires" on 24 Jan 1867. Perhaps there was another Elizabeth Myers who married a Samuel Gano on 27 January, but it's not in Deats. You wrote: Do you know WHEN Joseph GANO committed suicide? Answer: There was an inquest, referred to in an article by John Bellis. The date was 23 Sep 1886. You wrote: Both Joseph and Elizabeth were 37 years of age when they married 27 Jan 1867. He is shown as a widower and she is shown as single. I have found them on the U.S. Census but with no children listed. I doubt if they left descendants as a result of their union. Answer: Well, there was more than one Joseph Gano. I found a few of them in Hunterdon in the 1850-1880 census records, only one married to a "Lizzie." That was in the 1880 census for "East Raritan" Twp. They were both 48 years old (born about 1832), living alone. Charles Gano was an overseer of roads in Delaware Twp in 1840. His son Joseph fought in the Civil War (Co B 38 Reg NJ Vol), which may explain why he committed suicide. As to Samuel Gano, I have the following-- Samuel, born about 1760 to Wm Gano and Sarah Green, spouse unknown, had 8 children, including another Samuel Gano (born abt 1785). In 1804, his mother Sarah referred in her will to his children. Plus a Samuel Gano in Alexandria Twp who had a son Joseph who was 21 in 1850. Hm. A lot more can be found in the census records. Marfy -----Original Message----- From: Bill Morrow [mailto:mchief@hal-pc.org] Sent: Wednesday, June 29, 2005 1:11 PM To: Marfy Goodspeed Subject: HANN/MEIRS in Hunterdon Co., NJ Hi again Marfy: I should KNOW BETTER than to write e-mails from "memory" which seems to be getting worse by the day. Of course I know that Anna HANN married Albertus MEIRS. I have copies of the Revolutionary War Pension Application which contained a copy of their family bible. I am glad you "straightened me out" on the two Peter MYERS (spelling I have adopted as the standard although most records reflect different spellings). You indicate that the one in Tewksbury Twp. is the son of Cornelius and I am convinced that the one in Raritan Twp., who married Mary YOUNG is the son of Simon MYERS whose land was divided among his children in 1814. I notice you have been corresponding with Marilyn Jones of Yreka, CA (minnj@sbcglobal.net) re: Peter Myers, son of Albertus and Anna HANN MYERS. Marilyn sent me an extensive (31 page) file of her research in an e-mail dated 5 Mar 2004. This file contains information about Peter MYERS who died 27 Oct 1874 in Nunda, Livingston, NY. According to this file he married (1) Elizabeth HOOVER, (2) Betsey STIVERS, Nov 18, 1840 in Nunda, Livingston, NY. I have NOT verified any of this information since I believe my only connection with the descendants of this Peter MYERS is through his mother Anna HANN who married Albertus MYERS. I think I will run down to the library this afternoon to look again at Hank Jones Jrs. book "More Palatine Families" for the family of John Johannes Albertus MYERS. When I get a little "free time" I will e-mail you ALL of my direct line of HANN from the immigrant ancestor Peter HANN and his wife Elizabeth HOPPAUGH to my maternal grandmother Sarah Cray HANN WILSON JACKSON. My mother was Anna Mildred WILSON daughter of Sarah Cray HANN and her first husband Ira WILSON who died when my mother was a little child (age 3 or 4). Thank you again for your help on my MYERS line. It looks as though my "speculation" that ALL of the MIERS/MYERS men in Hunterdon County in the late 1700's were from a "common ancestor". I would appreciate knowing your connection or interest in the MYERS family of Hunterdon County, NJ. Regards, Bill Morrow in Houston, TX (b. 1935 in Trenton, NJ) P.S. The marriage record of Joseph GANO to Elizabeth MYERS reflect that the parents were Samuel GANO and Peter MYERS. Your note indicates he was the son of Charles GANO. Do you know WHEN Joseph GANO committed suicide? Both Joseph and Elizabeth were 37 years of age when they married 27 Jan 1867. He is shown as a widower and she is shown as single. I have found them on the U.S. Census but with no children listed. I doubt if they left descendants as a result of their union.
Dear Kathie and Helen, As to the marriage of Cornelius and Sarah, the date I have is 30 Jul 1803, not 23 Feb. I got my date from Deats' HC Marriages; they were married by Hough, JP (Bk 1 pg 70). I have 8 children in that family (Catherine 1803, Bernice 1804, Anna 1805, Cornelius 1807, Peter 1808, Sarah Ann 1809, William 1811, Asher 1812). Helen, thank you--I did not have a death date for either Catherine or John. You write that they were buried in Locktown. Was that in the Christian Church cemetery? I don't have them on my list for the Baptist cemetery. And here is an example of the confusing Williamsons. I have the father Cornelius as the son of Samuel and Eleanor Williamson, not Cornelius. In 1807 there were 3 Cornelius Williamsons taxed in Amwell on large farms. Perhaps one of the Williamson family researchers can help us out. Sarah Hoppock (19 Jan 1779-9 Oct 1813) was the daughter of Peter Hoppock (c.1733 Amwell-bef Sep 1809 Lebanon) and Catharine Dalrymple (no dates). Peter was christened 10 Jun 1733 in the Readington Reformed Church, the son of Jost & Geertje Hoppock. Actually, I think Peter had two wives, and I'm not sure if Catharine was the one who had all his children. Second wife was Ann Hummer. -----Original Message----- From: Helen [mailto:helenm57@patmedia.net] Sent: Friday, July 01, 2005 1:37 AM To: NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NJHUNTER] To Kathie, RE: Catharine Williamson Buchanan Hi Kathie, I have a file on this family unit, and will be happy to share. Shepherd is buried in Locktown 1879 at 70 yrs Wife Margaret is there also. Flag and marker there so easy to find. Hope you get to check and see if Elisha is at Slacks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marfy Goodspeed" <marfy.goodspeed@verizon.net> To: <NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 30, 2005 12:32 PM Subject: RE: [NJHUNTER] Independance Graveyard/Slack's Corner >I have been told that the cemetery is in Kingwood Township, on the > Locktown Road, south of Hwy 12. I have been told that the cemetery is in Kingwood Township, on the Locktown Road, south of Hwy 12. One of my favorite people (Elisha Rittenhouse) was buried "near Locktown at Slack's Corner" [Deats] after he died on 15 Dec 1846. This surprised me when I learned it because he superintended the construction of the Baptist Church at Locktown, and I expected him to be buried there. But he may have fallen out with the "Old Schoolers." I don't know if the HCHS has a listing of burials at Slack's Corner; if they did copy the stones, the names would be mixed in with the other names in their card file. Does anyone know the exact location of Slack's Corner? It is not listed in the book "Hunterdon County Place Names"; however, Slacktown is listed. I am in the process of amending the referenced book with additions from the Hunterdon Gazette and if someone has the information, I'll add this one! Thank you, Bill
Found John R. Sutton and Aaron P. Sutton living next to each other in the 1860 Federal Census, Hunterdon Co., Tewksbury Township. I would tend to believe these are brothers given proximity, ages and both noted as masons by trade. I have John R. Sutton (b. ca 1834) married first to an Elizabeth ? and having two children, George W. (ca 1855) and Anna (b. ca 1858 and d. before 1860). Elizabeth died before 1869 as I have John marrying Josephine D. Ammerman in Mar 1869 and having numerous children through the year 1891. John R. died between 1892 and 1910 (cannot locate either individuals in the 1900 census). Josephine lived at least until 1920s. Aaron R. Sutton (b. ca 1836) married first to Sarah A. Everett (11 Sep 1858). The couple had at least three children with Sarah dying of childbed on 13 Oct 1864 following birth of Alfred on 5 Oct 1864. Aaron married second Mary Rebecca Voorhees after the death of his first wife probably about 1866-68. They had several children with the last I have being born Feb 1882. I have no death dates for neither John R. or Aaron P. Sutton nor Josephine Ammerman or Mary Voorhees. Also am trying to piece together who the parents of the two Sutton boys are. If anyone has any information on these families please contact me. Thanks, Dennis Sutton

Where can I find this? I found these by accident at our local library in downtown Seattle. They've got a bunch more stuff there but I could not find an index for much of anything. Next time I'll get a librarian to help and maybe I can figure out what to look at. Laurence

We found it a long time ago and think it was part of our Shepherd Farm as the only stones on the ground was Shepherds. Last time there nothing but stones thrown to the side. I noticed an Iron fence yard by the road and thought I took pictures, however can't find only the Shepherd stones. Did find the notes I made of some of the people in there. Says there are a least dozen stones there. I did put down these names but not info, Rittenhouse, Holmes, Bray & Pegg. One Pegg stone I copied was Jacob Pegg son of Mahon and Eliz. Pegg . He died 10 July 1925 and bn 18 Dec. 1842. My interest in the Peggs..... Dinah Hockenbury Pegg and hus. Mahlon, was because she must have boarded Wm. Shepherd and Eliz as they died at her place. Graveyard is at Slacks Corner perhaps someone would go look?? Norma Thanks for getting back to me. I live in northern Delaware Twp, Hunterdon County, and come across the Pegg name from time to time. I'm particularly interested in Daniel Pegg, who seems to have been the innkeeper of the Boarshead Inn before the Revolution. I have his death as 1778, without a will. His wife was Catherine (possibly a Buchanan) and he had nine children. I don't know who his parents were or where he came from. If you are interested in this family I will send you the rest of my information. Marfy

Donna and David, Any chance that you might have a Evalina EMMONS who had a daughter Mildred EMMONS? Mildred is my Grandmother, (on my father's side) she was born out of wedlock. I have her birth, death and marriage certifate. I also have her SS card. She was born April 6, 1910 in German Valley, Washington Township, Morris Co, NJ. On her birth certifate it has her father as Walter SNYDER (O.W.) aka out of wedlock. He was 18 and his occupation was a laborer. On her marriage certifate it has her father as Clyde RUSH. Her SS card has her name as Mildred RUSH HILLPOT SILVERS. She was never married before she met my grandfather. She was 18 when she married him. My mother said that she lived for awhile on an Indian Reservation either in NJ or PA after she was born till she met my grandfather and that might be where the HILLPOT came in. I have been at a dead end with her for over 10 yrs.
