On RootsWeb.com there are several databases with Thomas PETTIT with a son Nathaniel, born Hunterdon Co. NJ 1705 to 1710 birth years. Various wives names. Have you conferred with those researchers as well, to see if any have LONDON related familly members to your PETTIT families?? Just noticed them, while looking at something else. >From Geneva Gazette 15 April 1881 (Ontario Co., NY ) http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyontari/RotoRogobituaries.htm Samuel Robinson - We had barely time to announce in our last the death of this venerable citizen. The event occurred a few minutes before 3 o'clock p.m. of Friday the 8th inst. The deceased was known to nearly every man, woman and child in Geneva, so long had he gone to and fro among us. He was a native of Tewksbury, Hunterdon county, N. J., born March 29th, 1797 - making his age a few days over 84 years. He emigrated to this state in 1826, and early in the following year settled in Geneva. His first labor was performed in Teall's mill at the outlet. In the few years following he was employed as a teamster by the Messrs. Rumney, merchants and owners of the steamboat on Seneca Lake. Still later and for many years he labored for the Messrs. Hastings, merchants and extensive grain buyers and shippers in their day. Successive merchants like Mr. Hughes, Mr. Cobb, and Messrs. J. W. Smith & Co. found in him reliable and faithful help in packing wool, fruit &c. Without a trade, he was always willing and cheerful to perform any labor that his hands found to do, was never idle if employment could be had. In 1836 Mr. Robinson united by profession of faith with the First Presbyterian Church of this village, and there is good evidence for the belief that he lived ever afterwards the life of a God-fearing and God-serving Christian. Three children were born to him - one son and two daughters - all of whom survive. The son, Joseph, and one daughter, Mrs. Van Tuyl, reside here, and were most affectionate and assiduous in their attention to the aged and loved parent in his last illness, which providentially was of but short duration. In his case the machinery had fairly worn out by age. He fell at last like a shock of corn fully ripe. The funeral of deceased took place last Monday, Rev. Dr. Nelson officiating. Amongst the attendants were all the shopmates of Mr. Van Tuyl from T. Smith & Co.'s steam bending works, the proprietors kindly closing the factory for such purpose.
Melva, The Hammond maps tend to show only the very earliest landowners, so if your Hess's moved here in the 1760's, that is why they would not show up on these maps. Also, unfortunately, no Hess is mentioned in the County's deed book I, (up to 1795), or in the index to mortgages (1766-1798), suggesting that Leonard Hess was more likely a renter than a landowner. You have done well to find as much as you have. Out of curiosity, how did you find Leonard's grave? NJ in the 1760's or so. One of the sons of this family, Peter, a Rev. War soldier, stated that he was born in 1758 in this country. Peter and another brother, John Martin Hess jr. removed to Philadelphia and raised children there. Another brother, Leonard, stayed in Hunterdon County; his grave marker shows that he was born in 1756 (probably the eldest child). I just wanted to point out that Chambers has been proved to be inaccurate in some cases. Use him as a starting point, by all means, but double check your 'facts' through other sources. Cheers, Mary Jo C. Martin Melbourne, Australia
Possibly the HESS family moved as did the MILLS and others, MILLER, etc. related. Over to Morris or what is now Sussex Counties?? James MILLS, married a Christina HESS. Had a son James MARCELLUS/AS/ES MILLS. Says not related to the John MILLS - Rebecca SMITH family. Possibly the land what is now Hunterdon was once Morris or one of the other counties. Administrators of his estate were recorded on May 2, 1759: Elisabeth Fain (signed in German) and Jonathan Pettit. The Fine families lived in Greenwich Township, now Warren - then Sussex County. Greenwich Township is near the "new" church in Phillipsburg and near Finesville. We viewed microfilm of the original court records concerning disposition of the estate of John Fine. The original documents show the deceased was Johannes Fein and the widow, administrator was Elisabetha Fein. Elisabetha signed her name in German Script. Gottfried Molich was to be co-administrator. His name was crossed out and Jonathan Pettit substituted. Jonathan Pettit was likely a friend who could speak English and deal with the government. If you cannot find Mr. LONDON and family still around New Jersey, have you tried in Ontario, CANADA or one of the other provinces. The time frame you are in, is before the Revolutionary War, and many left the 13 Colonies to Canada. They did not wish to fight, possibly because of their religious convictions. That's true--I looked up 'Rittenhouse' in the geneology section, and it had the son as the father, and some other errors in a short space, but it was still interesting. It's good to point that out, though, because there's not a lot of information for a lot of families, and this info should definitely be taken with a grain of salt. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Jo C.
