    1. Re: [NJHUNTER] Dennis Sutton's Hunterdon County Democrat Extracts
    2. Not sure but has anyone else noticed the database on the rootsweb.com called flathrop or fredlathrop, he has compiled a database of all names who were in Hunterdon County, New Jersey at one time. Whether they stayed there, or were passing through to other counties. Several of my MILLS family members are also listed on that database. But have found them as actual residents of Morris County, and Essex County, now Union County. And that they did not stay there either, but found them as buried in other places, not New Jersey. Pat cw Notes from Kaye Larsen re her family. This little tidbit from Warren County, NJ GEN WEB site: Warren County was originally part of West Jersey. It was included in Hunterdon when that county was erected in 1713/14 remained a part of it till Morris was set off in 1738/39. It was part of the territory of Sussex County when that county was erected in 1753 and so remained till the Legislature enactment of November 20, 1824, made a separate county of it. So if you cannot find your ancestor of interest, possibly check out adjacent counties. From very early settlers, to late century ones. In that Hunterdon County, was made from other larger counties. As well as part of Hunterdon was also annexed to other surrounding ones. In that our ancestors themselves, did not physically remove themselves. The land, their farms, etc, orchards, etc. So you have records of them in Hunterdon county, but in fact, at one time, could have been Morris, Sussex or Essex or Union counties. Just depended on how the lines were changed around them. In a message dated 5/3/2008 8:46:43 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Just curious. Which SUTTON family member? 2. Mrs. Oscar Dow died 13 JUNE 1888 . The article clearly states it as such. When you type in a name, it will come up as January of whatever year the event happened. You still must search the paper for the whole year. So when it shows in the index that Mrs. Oscar down died the 13th ins. that did not mean that she died in January. You must search the whole year until you find the article. As it is the article appeared in the June 26th edition of the paper and is worded thusly: Mrs. Oscar Dow, aged 27, whose husband occupies Hon. John G. Schenck’s upper farm, near Neshanic, died suddenly on Wednesday, 13th inst. Inst. is the abbreviation for instant which means that she died the thirteenth of the present month which was June. It was in the June edition: "June 26, 1888, Fiftieth Volume, No. 46 >From Near By Communities Items of Interest Blown in from Neighboring Counties Mrs. Oscar Dow, aged 27, whose husband occupies Hon. 2. Being we are talking about books. I have been trying to get a copy of "Early Generations of the Search Family By Jean Search Firlein, Lewis Fuller Parsly. Copyright 1979. There are about 3 libraries which have this book to lend but are way too far for me to travel. I would be grateful for any info to find this book. Tirzah Fleming Doyle **************Need a new ride? 3. Ask your local library to get it for you via "interlibrary loan." You don't need to go to the actual "owning" library. [email protected] wrote: Being we are talking about books. 3. Hi Louise, Would you please be more specific in your reference? I could only find one mention of "Shannock" in 1845 and it was in a "for sale" item on page 72 under a date of Oct. 22, 1845. I also ran "meeting house" with no bites and "meeting" which got a bunch of hits but none associated with a death! Perhaps the year is not correct? Please recheck the date and let me know and I'll see if I can help. The word "Shannock" is associated with "Neshanic" in the Hunterdon County Place Names book that is on CD #4. See page 30. But that links the 2 words in reference to the Neshanic River. The town of Neshanic is a few miles due East of Flemington and is located in Somerset County. Unless someone else knows more about it than I, we might presume that "Shannock Meeting House" could be the Neshanic Meeting House! Anyone out there know more about this? Regards, Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: Hunterdon County Rootsweb Mailing List Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 7:22 PM Subject: [NJHUNTER] Shannock Meeting House Does anyone know where Shannock Meeting House is located? It is listed as the location of death in an obituary in 1845 in the Hunterdon Gazette. The only one I come up with when I "google" is in Virginia. Wouldn't the newspaper have added the state of Virginia to the location if it were not local? Thanks for any help.
