Dear Mike, Thank you for sending this citation to the list. I have long wondered about how Jonathan H. Rake was connected with Jacob Fox. He shows up in deeds selling land that belonged to Fox's estate, and in fact, sold the land on which my house stands. However, the land in dispute in the court case you cited is a different lot from mine. I was fascinated to learn that Thomas Godown and wife Eve separated after Isaac Fox came of age, and that Thomas died in the poorhouse. What I don't know is where Eve and son Isaac went to live after selling the "premises" to Asa Moore. (By the way, that premises was located on Ferry Road in Delaware Twp. Hunterdon Co., I think.) The answer may be that Isaac Fox owned land in Alexandria Township, and was a miller there. That land was probably other land that he inherited from his father Jacob. Jacob was something of a real estate speculator, which makes figuring out who was where when a little challenging. I do not know where Jacob Fox's Alexandria homestead was, but that is where he died in 1795. Just to make things a little more interesting, the Fox and Rake families got their start in Delaware Twp in the mid 1700s, bordering Sandbrook Road in Delaware Twp. So Jonathan Rake certainly had reason to be acquainted with Isaac Fox. Good morning and thank you. The only disappointing and confusing thing about this is that Carrie said--as I mentioned--put down on legal documents and said to her family that her parents were Jonathan and Hannah Pickel. Stranger stories have been told, I know, but when she was so far away in time and distance, I don't see the need for lying. We may never know. If Elizabeth and Carrie were sisters...then they shared the other siblings, too. I have no other name for Caroline's parents than the above that she mentioned. I know that my grandparents didn't know that they weren't her parents because Grandpa (W.E. Chandler of MI) lived to be one-hundred and alert to the end. He lived with my family, Stewart and Mildred (Annis) Chandler after my grandmother died in her early eighties. He did back genealogy plus the names and towns of all his fifteen siblings of whom he was the youngest living one...and to whom they were married and who their children were. He has my grandmother's family all listed in the same way...except for Elizabeth...who doesn't appear, but he might not have known much about Carrie's family since it looks like no others besides the two lived in MI--unless the Calkins are related. These two seemed to live with other families, perhaps related to them or former neighbors, anyway. The Man/n name doesn't surprise me..pleases me that Elizabeth Man and her husband signed as witnesses to Carrie's marriage to Truman Curtis. I'm glad that there are no surprises in the Curtis family and seems to be well documented. I wonder who the Calkins were and what was their connection. I guess I'll have to do a little poking around on that one to for my own satisfaction. Where do I write for the will? I remember in my early days of genealogy I learned that NJ was one of the first genealogy-friendly states. This was nice information to get first thing in the morning. I was wondering where I start next. I hope you have a wonderfuk weekend, Helen Chandler (in Miami) In a message dated 11/15/2008 12:42:28 A.M. I don't know if he mentioned all of his children in his will, but it would be worth obtaining if you think they are the parents of Caroline and/or Elizabeth. It costs about $5. The 1840 census of Washington, Macolm Co., MI Elizabeth Pickle: no males, 1 female < 5, 2 females < 10, 1 female < 15. 1 female 40-50. On the same page was the family of Hiram Calkins (Elizabeth Pickle Jr was living with them in 1850) and a Mann family. It is likely that Elizabeth Pickle Sr. died before 1850 and her children went to live with family and friends. A probate record may exist for her or guardianships for her children who were under age. Tax records begin in Washington Twp in 1844. If Elizabeth Pickel Sr. owned land and died after 1843, she would be listed and you could get a clearer idea of when she died. It is likely that Elizabeth's husband purchased land when the family moved to Michigan. I think Dot answered this one. Truman had three wives and Carrie Pickel was the third (my great grandmother). She had at least two children who died at about eight months old...a year apart. My grandmother, Ina B. Curtis, was born a year later, I think. Then they had two more...One died at age 21, and Luna, the youngest lived to be "old" when she died. I don't have it in front of me. She married Frank Church of Pontiac, MI...as she was from there...and Carrie lived with them in her later years...or they lived with her...anyway, together, and then they moved to Los Angeles and she and her husband died there. The census said that Carrie had seven children, but only three lived. It's way past my bedtime, but so much happened tonight...first progress with Caroline PIckel since I started hunting several years ago. I'm so excited. Good night...or good morning...Helen Chandler In a message dated 11/14/2008 5:12:39 P.M. Since there is so much wisdom in the room tonight, I will ask for help with my most pressing challenge. Jonathan Hunter Rake and Adaline Godown were married 20 June 1826 in Hunterdon Co., NJ I have determined they had 4 children (at least): Jacob Fox Rake 9 Feb 1826 Sarah Adaline Rake 1828 Jonathan Hunter Rake 18 Sep 1830 Susan E. Rake 4 Apr 1841 I have not determined who Adaline's parents are. HOWEVER, a couple days ago, I found something on the internet at the Godown site that caught my eye: Marriage Records, Hunterdon County New Jersey (1795-1875). According to the book Adeline Godown and Jonathan Rake were married June 26,1826, 2-295 (Wilson,J.P.). J.P. meaning justice of the peace. The numbers following the date are the volume and page number of the original record. This may be a long shot but there is only one marriage listed early enough to be Adeline's parents. Godown,Thomas and Eve Fox, January 4,1801 1-43 (Lambert,Esq.). I thought it was a long shot "guess" until I remembered Jacob's middle name. If anyone has ideas or information on this, please let me know. I'd like to think I've finally made some progress on this one! THANK YOU! Kim Golding Tacoma [email protected] (PS - I originally sent this the the list's request email addy. whoops!)
