    1. Re: [NJHUDSON] New York City Census and City directories
    2. Hi, I belong to Ancestry. Maybe I am confused. New Jersey had a state census and I thought that maybe New York also had a state census. I found a genealogist that works in Jersey City that has provided me with info from the New Jersey State census that was on the off years (like 1885,1895,1905..). I am trying to find if there is a New York state census and if anyone knows of a way to get someone to look up names. Since the 1890 federal census doesn't exist, it was really great to get some info from 1885 and 1895. New Jersey Library has the Jersey Room which is a terrific resource, is there something like it for New York City?? The names I am working on are: Heuer/Hyer, Wrege, Donovan, Dacey/Deasy... (Seems like all the names have multiple spellings.) Thanks, Linda Bradshaw, Indianapolis

    2. Linda you are out of luck. There is no 1885 or 1895 State Census. I did find my family on the 1892, and 1905 in Brooklyn but never had to use Manhattan.
