Sometimes the headstone will list their place of birth. I've found out the locations from all sorts of ways. I found a 3rd marriage for one of my ancestors that listed his county of birth in Ireland. For another I found the headstone listed the county. For another I found them stopping off in Liverpool and it listed the county in that census. You have to try everything.
