    2. Lauren: I went through the license renewal in May, and never had a photo id in my life - and no passport either. If you have a JC birth certificate with a raised seal, take it and the other documents totalling the number of points the DMV wants to the DMV office. They will go through a verification process for your birth certificate that will require you to return on another day to complete the process once your birth certficate is verified. Basically, they take a copy of your certificate, fax it to someone, give you back your original and your other documents and call you at whatever number you give them to let you know to come back to the DMV once you've been verified. When you return, you go right to the next part of the process with the paperwork they have given you, get your photo license and you are done. It was relatively painless. (its a bit insulting to have been a NJ driver for forty years in my case and have to prove myself, all over again - like any of this would stop determined criminals - but it is not anywhere near as bad as I thought it was. ) At least you had a passport. I had to pick my husband up at Newark, and all I had with my picture on it was a Costco card. They didn't want to accept it, but finally gave in when I showed them every piece of paper in my wallet, including my voter registration card. How sad for all of us that we have to go through this like we are all under suspicion, rather than the other way around. I, as probably many other list members, was born at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital (which closed in 1979). My mother received a copy of my birth certificate several weeks after I was born, but, because of the "suspected" sale of fradulent documents by county workers in Jersey City, my birth certificate is no longer valid!!! I'm one of those increasingly disappearing people who never got a photo license, because I wasn't required to. I use my passport when I have to produce photo ID. Next renewal, however, I'm required to add the photo to my license, which means I need to prove who I am and the old license doesn't count! So I need to produce a valid license (not the one I've used for 50+ years!) and other forms of ID. Maybe this would be a good time to assume a new identity! ;0) BTW - I understand the old Maternity Hospital building is being renovated into condos and rental apartments. As for Jersey City, I had a dispute with the person over the phone about this issue. His answer was we are no longer accepting any new requests for "certificates." You must write to the state. In fact, you cannot use both a birth certificate (no matter from what town in NJ) and a passport. Check the NJ DMV site: for info on what you need to bring for a new license. http://www.dmv.org/nj-new-jersey/drivers-license.php Ray C -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, June 29, 2006 1:31 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NJHUDSON-L] (no subject) This is so aggravating! How do I find the ship they took to come to the U.S. What I know: Joseph Anton Rudtner born 19 Mar 1865 and Maria Katharina Rudtner born 8 Sept 1870 both came to the U.S. but I do not know for sure that they came together. Joseph Anton Rudtner Married Helene Stoll 28 Apr 1889 at St Nickolas Church in NYC He applied to become a citizen 7 May 1889 and became a citizen 14 Sept 1893. The 1920 Census shows his year of immigration as 1887. On a passport application in 1922 he says he emigrated sailing from Rotterdam about Sept 1888. Maria Katharina Rudtner, in 1911 lived on 121 Clinton Street in West Hoboken NJ, and she is married to Richard Stadelhofer. She died and was buried in Holy Name Cemetery on 14 Nov 1921. Any help will be appreciated. TIA, Gloria M.
