The name of this street dates back to the Dutch era - see http://www.njcu.edu/programs/jchistory/Pages/P_Pages/Pavonia.htm Now, as in the 1880's it crosses the Hamilton Park section of downtown - it is in fact interrupted by the park. It runs in between 8th and 9th Streets. Nowadays it is also interrupted by the Newport Mall, back then it ran all the way down to the river along the edge of the NYLE&WRR tracks (I believe that's "New York Lackawanna, Erie & Western RR"), where it ended in one of the major ferries and the passenger depot of those massive railyards. Remember that there was no connecting rail service across the Hudson until 1908/09 - and when it came in the H&M railroad station (now PATH) was located there, which is still reflected in the name of the PATH station: "Pavonia/Newport." It runs east -west from the Hudson River. It shows up on an 1804 map in one of my books.
