    1. Re: [NJHUDSON] Documents w/ Persons Description on it?
    2. With reference to the fourth paragraph, but we have lots of photos of the West Hoboken Germans (none of whom served in the Civil War, interestingly). I have a relative that came over from Germany and served in the Civil War, he was wounded, died in 1926 and is buried in upstate New York. But we need to remember that the life and times were very different and we cannot have unrealistic expectations. We won't find videos of our great-grannies running a stoplight as one can find in Chicago now (I just MAY have starred in one of those this morning!) We have no photos of the New York Irish in that generation, either, and only the above description -- but we have lots of photos of the West Hoboken Germans (none of whom served in the Civil War, interestingly). It may have been a question of who could afford to hire a photographer and who had relatives elsewhere to whom they were writing and sending photos, and whose mother wanted a photo. My Irish immigrants were both Great Famine immigrants who were raised in Irish orphanages, then turned out at age 15 to fend for themselves -- so they had no one taking their First Communion pictures and such, no family traditions they knew of -- and they were lucky to get a crust of bread. I just bless and thank them for their grit and determination because I have certainly had a good life due to their strong wills and courage! --- On Mon, 4/20/09, Jeanne Thomas <gthomas1@tampabay.rr.com> wrote: From: Jeanne Thomas <gthomas1@tampabay.rr.com> Subject: Re: [NJHUDSON] Documents w/ Persons Description on it? 3. I've wondered for years why none of the Boves served.  Maybe they pretended they didn't understand English.  They were in the US earlier than my Irish who, of course, arrived speaking English and had a leg up on everyone.    My other Germans, the Gansbergs, didn't arrive in Jersey City until 1866, just after the Civil War --- but the Boves were in the US in 1851.  They were good people, certainly.  One son was a priest and my great-grandfather would have been young -- he was born after they arrived in 1851 -- but Johann would have been the right age and the eldest, Georg Friedrich would have been about 36-37, with a lot of kids, when the war started. --- On Mon, 4/20/09, AnnWicki@aol.com <AnnWicki@aol.com> wrote: From: AnnWicki@aol.com <AnnWicki@aol.com> Subject: Re: [NJHUDSON] Documents w/ Persons Description on it?
