Dear Rochelle, It is very easy to get to the Jersey City Library from Hamilton NJ by train. By all means, unless you absolutely cannot walk two long blocks and three short blocks to the library, leave your car at the Hamilton Station and take the NJT train to Newark. At Newark, change to the PATH train (may be right across the platform). Newark is the end of the line, so take any PATH train three stops (pass Harrison and Journal Square) to Grove Street. When you exit the station ask someone to point you towards City Hall (three short blocks south on Grove Street). Turn right (west) on Montgomery Street. Walk two long blocks on Montgomery Street (Van Vorst Park is along the second block) to Jersey Avenue. The library is on the northeast corner, with the entrance on Jersey Avenue. Once in the library, you will want to visit the rest rooms on the first floor, as they are the only public rest rooms in the building. Then you will probably want to go the New Jersey Room on the third floor, or perhaps look at old newspapers (Jersey Journal, Hudson Dispatch, Jersey Observer, etc.) on microfilm in the Reference Room on the second floor. Take the grand staircase, or board the ancient elevator if a lot of steps are a chore. By the way, while in the library, be sure to visit the used book store in the Circulation Dept. on the second floor (softbound 50 cents or hardbound for $1). The staff throughout the library are extremely kind and helpful. Check the library's web site for more information. After your visit, retrace your steps to the Grove Street PATH station. Although there is only one platform, there are a variety of trains there. Be sure to board a train going directly back to Newark (skip the trains ending at Journal Square as you will have to change there to the Newark train anyhow). Obviously, these directions will work for anyone coming by train from other points in New Jersey on a line stopping at Newark. Genealogically yours, Joel R.
