Genealogy is many things to many people. You and I sort of fall in the category I call 'purists' for lack of a better word. We want to have as much proof as possible. Other people are happy just to collect names. I started my research in the late 1960s (to put it in perspective the 1900 census had not yet been released to the public). I would kill to know where some of the information in One World Tree originated. But, then, I would kill to know where some of the notes I took in those early years originated. I can tell from my writing how excited I was to find the information but I had not yet understood the importance of citing my reference. Nice thing about genealogy is that it is different for each person. So the best we can do is each of us set the rules for ourselves. I use the notes section of my genealogy program to enter information that may or may not be correct. I site the source and put a note "more research is needed to verify". When I look on One World Tree I find all kinds of discrepancies. Some people who submit their tree to Ancestry.com have sources but most don't. It would be easy to simply use that information but I'm concerned about it's accuracy and wonder whose information I should believe. I've taken the stand not to use any of the One World Tree information unless it has a source I can check myself. One particular name in my tree (Vreeland) not only has tons of information on One World Tree but a few members of that branch have created a web site with all sorts of wonderful information on it. The information is pretty convincing and it is obvious they have worked hard for many years at recording the family history. Here's my dilemma...is it acceptable to take the information contained on their web page (and others like it) and transcribe it into my tree using their web page as my source? Or, should a source be a record of some sort?
