    2. My grandfather was a JC police officer in 1930. I tried to get his file and they said they no longer existed. Don't know if I really accept that but couldn't get anything from them. 3. Rule of thumb is to write to them certified mail. Whatever said over the phone turns into a "what he said, she said". Placing it in writing starts an official inquiry that must be truthfully be answered. That letter is your ammo if they do you wrong... 3. Sometimes you just get lucky. Some years ago I called the JCPD 5th precinct, to see if there were any records for my grand uncle Robert Hay. They connected me with the personel records dept. and A nice woman named Fannie took my info. About a week later I received copies of four documents. Two concerned his application for retirement, one was his application to the Firemen's and Policemen's Pension Fund, and the last was an index card, with his name, rank, badge #, dob, dod, and date of retirement. He was appointed in 1920 and retired in 1947. The pension app. also gave family info, marital status, date of marriage, wife's name and DOB, # of children their age & sex. This app. was to be returned to the office of the Secretary Rm. 55 City Hall JC, NJ. I'd try calling the precinct your ancestor worked in, on various days & times to see if you find a sympathetic ear who may assist you. I'd do some checking with the main Library in JC and the archives in Trenton in case the records were recently transfered. Hope this helps you in your search.
