Someone on this list helpfully pointed out to me that Hoboken was where many Germans from Brenen settled. So, I'm now asking if anyone who has access to the Hoboken City Directory for 1856 could do a look-up for either a John Dammann or a Christian Dammann. (Someone else pointed out that Germans had 'legal' names and familiar names.) Marion
