My gr-grandfather, John Dammann, was sworn in as a citizen in No. Bergen in January, 1856. Since he applied in NY in 1848 and my grandfather was born in NY in 1852, I assume he must have moved to NJ between '52 & '56. I understand that most of the Germans lived in Weehawken in those days. Does anyone have access to city directories for Weehawken and No. Bergen for any of those years? An address would give me a starting point for checking the 1850 census.
