Hello, Now that I know my g-grandfather was from England, how do I go about tracing where he came from in England? All suggestions and help is appreciated. Thank you, Joan
Joan, It will be a bit like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but might be possible if done methodically. If you have a FHC near you, go and ask to look at the microfiche of births and marriages for the various counties in England. Try to find a county that has a high concentration of persons with the surname you are looking for. I didn't know what county my GGF came from in England, but remember my grandfather calling him a Yorkie. With this bit of slang I chose to do Yorkshire County. I found a couple that was a combination of my GGF's middle name and surname. I kept the info as I didn't have my GGF's parents info. It turns out that the couple that caught my attention are my 3GGP's. I wish you tons of luck in your search Bertha Hall Plainfield, CT.. ----- Original Message ----- From: joan doyle <joane919@home.com> To: <NJHUDSON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 27, 2000 1:25 AM Subject: [NJHUDSON-L] Where do I go from here? > Hello, > > Now that I know my g-grandfather was from England, how do I go about tracing > where he came from in England? Hi Joan: A naturalization record might give you an exact location. Before 1906 courts could ask any info they wanted to. Some asked a lot, some hardly anything. If he was alive in 1900, the census will tell you what year he immigrated and if he naturalized. Usuallly people went to the court nearest where they lived, so that would be the place to start. Collect every possible record you can for him and for his siblings. You might get a clue from them. This is how I found out where my great grandmother came from. She died in 1899, no obit, death record said "Ireland" but her brother's 3 line obituary in 1907 said "native of County Fermanagh". Good Luck!
