Hello List, I've spent the last 2 days going thru the 1880 census of Jersey City looking for several addresses. I asked for help with the Wards, and was successful with a few, but they only had maps with the 1870 & 1890 wards, and they had all changed. This was at the Trenton Archives. I'm looking for: 1. Front St. near Academy 2. Clarke Ave. near Old Bergen Rd. 3. 96 Central Ave. These are all addresses from the 1880 Directory. EDs would also come in handy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Have you tried any of the mapping programs like mapquest or expedia where you can enter the address you are looking for and get a map? I know that these are old addresses and you might also first want to check to see whether there was any changes to addresses as the town changed -- post office might be able to help or town clerk or assessor's office. This happened to me in Union City which used to be Union Hill and West Hoboken. I had a lot of addresses that went through a conversion. The Union City post office has a directory that was published in the 1940's by the now merged Hudson Dispatch, which listed all the conversions -- they might have Jersey City as well -- but you have to realize that there are some who are ignorant of this fact. I was just lucky that the person that I spoke to found the reference in the basement somewhere and called me back -- so whoever you speak to -- be persistent, the postmaster would know and make sure you reference the Hudson Dispatch publication.of 1940.
