Greetings, I looked at those records, the daybooks, that the LDS library had on film when I was out in Salt Lake for a scientific meeting a few years ago. The records had a great deal of info. my grandfather Frank was one of 15 kids according to the 1900 census and in doing the family history I wanted to get the names of all the siblings who died young. The first two kids were acctually buried in the poor ground. A few years later when they had a bit of money they moved them to a grave with other kids who had died young and one of the grandparents. Found the names of one of the kids and that helped me confirm my great grandfathers name. Anyway, there is quite a bit of neat info! Interestingly, the folks at the LDS church seemed intimidated by the use of Latin in the records and post a warning at the beginning of the film. The names and transactions are all in English so post-VII Catholics like myself can read through the records <grin>. Ken At 07:55 AM 1/31/2001 -0800, P Dales wrote: >Maybe someone can help. There are Mormon - Church of the Latter Day Saints Family History Centers near most communities in the U.S. Anyone (even Latin-reading pre-VII RCs like me!) can use their facilities for no charge. But try to call ahead for their hours. They are volunteer staffed and may be open only a few hours only 2 or 3 days/evenings a week. They have a good deal of information right there which you can use ...... especially for their local area. In addition, you can look through their card catalog, fiche catalogs, and online and order any microfilm(s) of census, church, cemetery, other records for $3.50 from Salt Lake City, if they don't have on hand what you need. They process the order for you. When your film(s) arrives they will send you a card and you have four weeks to get over there and look through your film for the information you seek. They will show you how to use the Microfiche Readers and the Microfilm Readers ..... if I can do it, anyone can, believe me! You do need to be able to work the light switch on the reader. These are not machines ..... once you slide the film or the fiche into place, you control the action with a simple lever or a hand crank! Last time I was there, as I got my film out of the drawer I noticed there was another film there with the very next serial number ..... so I grabbed that one, too, and got myself another three years of Jersey City directories for free that night! I have rented about 15 films in the last few months from looking at what is catalogued on just one little microfiche from their rack which is entitled HUDSON COUNTY, NEW JERSEY. It has all Hudson County church records, probably .... except St. John's Evangelical Lutheran in Jersey City, which I desperately need! It has cemeteries, city directories, amazingly helpful stuff. Go to your nearest Mormon - Church of the Latter Day Saints and find out for yourself - you'll love it! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenneth Harrington McKeever" <mckeever@AESOP.RUTGERS.EDU> To: <NJHUDSON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 11:28 AM Subject: Re: [NJHUDSON-L] Holy Name Cem.
