I have found that when I cannot get information from civil records, I locate the churches in the area that subjects may have attended and order the microfilms of the records if they are available from the LDS center. I have had good results in finding a baptisimal or death record that is relevant in most cases. To find if the records have been photographed, search familysearch.com for the county and state and see what pops up. Good hunting.
