    1. [NJHUDSON] GSNJ members - Can you help?
    2. Joan M Lowry
    3. Hi All! Are you going to the FGS Conference in Philadelphia PA from 9/3/08 through 9/6/08? GSNJ is having an exhibit booth at the conference, but we need your help! If you are a GSNJ member and will be at the conference, would you consider assisting us with the booth for an hour or two during the conference? It's a great chance to meet other GSNJ members, spend some time with GSNJ trustees, and help promote our society! If you are able to spare some time to help with the booth - please contact <mailto:membership@gsnj.org>. We are especially in need of help for Thursday and Saturday afternoons, but other times are also available. Let us know when you think you could help and we'll schedule you in. If you aren't attending the conference - but will be in the Philadelphia area and want to help - you can volunteer at the booth (and then have a chance to shop the other exhibitors while you're there!) Just let us know when you could help out. We'd love to have you! The GSNJ booth will be closed on Friday from noon to 2pm, during the GSNJ sponsored luncheon. We encourage you to join us for the luncheon and hear Drew Smith, one half of the podcasting duo, The Genealogy Guys. It should be a good lunch and good entertainment! We hope to see you all in Philadelphia - stop by the booth (#107) and say hello! Regards, Joan Joan M. Lowry mailto:jmlowry@earthlink.net

    3. You also have to be aware that the house numbers changed along with the street names ie., my grandfather's business was at 469 Summit Ave and that was changed to 2309 Summit Ave. Another bldg in Weehawken where my parents lived was changed from something like 409 to 411 -- so there can be subtle or drastic changes depending where. John -- thanks for the link -- didn't know it existed. Claire

    3. At 02:01 AM 8/8/2008, you wrote: >Does anyone know where Herman Ave. in Guttenberg was? Today it is 70th Street. Herman Avenue was one of the original street names in Guttenberg and dates back to the early 1850's when the Weehawken Land and Ferry Company platted and developed what was then Cooper's Farm. In 1910, Herman St became 26th St as part of a renaming of all North Hudson streets northwards from Union Hill. Later, in 1940, the numbered cross streets were renumbered beginning from the southern boundary of Union City. At that time 26th St became 70th St. Most of the "original" Guttenberg streets underwent name changes over the years as follows: Ferry Road became 27th St, then 71st St (except it retained the Ferry Road name down the hillside to the river). Herman Ave became 26th St, then 70th St. Franklin Ave became 25th St, then 69th St. Hudson Ave became 24th St, then 68th St. Hudson River Turnpike became River Road. Boulevard East did not exist before about 1895. First Street became Bellevue Ave. Bulls Ferry Road became Park Ave. Second St became Broadway. Third St became Hudson Ave. Fourth St became Palisade Ave. Fifth St became Madison Ave. Sixth St became Polk Ave. Seventh St became Jackson Ave. Eighth St became Adams Ave. Dallytown Road became Hudson Blvd. Bergenline Avenue is the only street to retain its identity over the years, although originally it was known as Bergen Line Road. 2. MIKE MCHENRY
    3. I have discovered an artifact in the way Mc names are entered at ancestry.com. Some names such as my own are entered as expected MCHENRY with no space after the C. Others are entered with a space after the C that is MC Henry. You must search both to be sure you captured all. MIKE maurmike1@verizon.net

    2. I remember the Otto Mack Funeral home on Central Av. in Jersey City, but of course that was way back, I would suggest the Jersey City Library, everyone speaks of the people there as being very nice and helpful. They would have the old Jersey Journal papers and Obituaries and suggestions to help you. I don't have their number offhand but it would be in the phone book. Good Luck ! 3. I know the Jersey City Library. They are a great resource. My big problem with this particular death is that I can't even give an approximate year. There is a 20 yr span of time during which it could have occurred and it might not have happened in NJ. Unless I misunderstood him my research cohort tells me the NJ archives did not have her death.
